Today I decided to monitor the Whitetop Mountain, VA RCAG site. Since it's over 75 miles from where I'm staying in Tennessee I decided to drive up to Bristol and I parked in the Bass Pro Shops parking lot at The Pinnacle. The distance from there to Whitetop Mountain is just a tad over 36 miles. The Whitetop Mountain site is a dual site for both Atlanta Center and Indianapolis Center. According to Google Maps the site is about 5450 feet in altitude. For Atlanta I monitored 120.725 and 126.775 though not at the same time. I was surprised that I could hear both sides of the transmissions. I was even more surprised that there was a different controller on each frequency. 120.725 was a female and 126.775 male. There definately was more traffic on 126.775. The handoff frequency for Indianapolis was 134.22. The Atlanta handoff frequencies were 120.42, 120.72, 124.37, 125.02, 125.92, 132.62, 132.97, and 134.07. On the Indianapolis side there was only 124.575. Again I had no trouble hearing the controller. The handoff frequencies for Atlanta were 120.72, 126.77, 132.97, and 134.07. For Indianapolis they were 119.52, 120.27, 123.77, 124.22, 126.57, 126.92, 128.22, 134.67, and 135.12. Washington handoff was on 127.92 and 133.02. Again I used my ICOM IC-A6. I find it is much more sensitive than some of the wideband receive HT's that I have.
