Is it possible to monitor park/wildlife rangers in Yellowstone. My wife and I are avid wildlife photographers and have seen folks listening to what looks like scanners. If it's possible what kind/type of scanner would we want to look at purchasing? I'm sure this has been asked many time but a search didn't bring anything up. Thanks for any and all help.

Here's a list of frequencies: http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=1908 Any kind of Handheld scanner will monitor these. Radio Shack tends to have closeouts and sales, so I would start there. Ebay is another choice. You do not need an expensive radio(big $ do not equal quality). You should be able to get something in the $70-$150 range easily) I would also pick scanners with banks, rather than Dynamic Memory ...they are easier to program.

The frequencies for Yellowstone Park listed here:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?aid=1908

Just about all handheld scanners from Uniden, GRE, or Radio Shack cover those frequencies and would do an acceptable job. Just to be sure, verify the frequency coverage of any scanner before you purchase. However, in mountainous areas reception may be variable even from the repeaters.

166.325 North repeater
165.5875 South and Top Notch repeaters
166.875 West and Holmes repeaters
172.5 Fire dispatch / cache
166.975 Lamar direct?

A small percentage of transmissions are P25 digital.

Just got back from Yellowstone /Teton
did not hear any P25 over 10 day period,
in YS could not copy all the time the south or west hole repeater BUT sometimes on UHF was better
the cars have 2 antennas VHF and ? UHF???? but one radio?
In Mommouth heard UHF link traffic that WAS not carried on VHF??!
and wht is the car unit number system ??
IN teton the main channel was active BUT they also ask if they should go over to secondary beacuse ch 1 repeater was busy - could NOT find the other channel, several units made reference to the FLAGG RANCH repeater could NOT find [hear} it??!!
One night on Teton Dispatch they call 478 [LE unit] to assist with an escort with 7CHARLIE34 passing south enterence taken to the Airport,
Teton unit had no comms with the YS unit as he kept asking if T Disp had an update location - all he could do was wait at Jackson Lake Lodge junction for a visual - YS past him but filed to stop and never radio them either?!
I though they had each others freq???!
anybody want fill in?

Both parks different unit numbers but no comms between them, fun place through
