I am having trouble programming the Montclair Twp (Essex Co) P25 system for some reason I can not get it to work on the BC 996D. I have the system working the the BC 796D and BC396T any clues. Thanks

I've got it working but some of the PD talkgroups are encrypted.

I have the modulation set to NFM. Also the P25 Threshold to manual and level of 7. I have status bit set to disabled and end code to enabled.

Here's the frequencies
506.9000
506.9250
507.0500
507.2000
507.6250

You need to define two bandplans

Bandplan 1
500.000 MHz 12.5 kHz 380

Bandplan 2
506.000 MHz 12.5 kHz 570

Here's a list of talkgroups I have set up. I cannot verify if this list is accurate or not as I cannot receive the system from where I live.
PD 1 32816
PD 2 32848

MVAU 32880

i'm also having trouble with programming Montclair. With my old 796 in took a few minutes. I've spent hours trying on the 996 with the above info. No good! Are there any tips or special items to watch while programming the sysytem I follow the 996 manual but no luck. I can hear the control channel so i should be able to recieve it-did on the 796 under same conditions. Also drove over to Montclair still nothing.

Also, it's a Motorola 3600 Type-II system, not a P25.

Make sure you set the system up correctly from the beginning...

Should it be setup for control channel only? I have not. I have put it Mototola typeII/P25(which is the only option in the 996,they are not separate options) and then UHF. Still nothing. I also entered the frequencies and then the two base frequencies.

Edit-I sat at Eagle Rock reservation for an 90 minutes today with the Montclair system programmed as two different sysytens-one control only and the other with all frequencies. The all frequencies system produced no audio and stopped on the control buzz noise a few times.
The control only provided some results. I first noticed the signal bars on my 996 reached only 2 and 3. This is very low for a sight overlooking downtown Montclair. A few years ago with my 796, Monclair boomed at that location. The P25 audio level had been set at auto 7. The sound was distorted. I followed the instructions in the 996 manual and adjusted the auto to 1 which produced a treshold number(left corner) of 1.57 and a treshold voltage level(right corner of screen) of 1.73. At this setting the sysytem stopped on an active transmission but there was no audio. I had to depart after 90 minutes of scanning.
I noticed that the higher I adjusted the audio level the left corner number decreased and the right corner number increased. Should the left numbers be adjusted lower or higher and and also what about the right corner numbers for best reception?

Spent 30 minutes across the top of Montclair this evening listening with control channels only system and threshold at 8. Several transmissions received but none of them intelligible. At least with the 796 the distortion didn't prevent listening.
Does anyone in the Essex County area receive Montclair without audio problems on a 996 and what settings work for you? The setttings mentioned in the beginning of this thread will not work for me.

It's listed here in the DB as analog and P25.

System Voice is listed as analog and P25. System Type is listed as Motorola Type II Smartnet. Project 25 addresses digital voice and trunked systems; P25 trunked systems always use P25 voice but P25 voice can also be used on conventional or Motorola Type II systems.

I have 2 996's programmed using UASD software the same way RocketNJ does. I am in Verona and have no problems picking up Montclair. Perhaps you have another problem with the radio. Do all your other systems work properly?

I have no problems with West Orange Ed wide, Verona Ed narrow, NJSP trunk and numerous conventional systems. What is your audio set at? I would gladly drive over to Verona(the 996 is in my auto) if needed and you could see the sysytem programmed in and the poor received quality and perhaps see if I could resolve the problem.

Download the free trial of ARC396 & open my system file for Montclair that I had made when I had a 396. This system came in just fine with all my audio setting on 'auto'

I've solved part of the trouble receiving Montclair. The signal south of Bloomfield Ave. in Montclair is weak even at Eagle Rock reservation(a cb radio sugnal from Mont. Hq would probably be stronger). Tonight I went North of Bloomfield Ave,along the ridge(Upper Mountain area)-good signals-4-5 bars and audible transmissions.
I could however only receive on the control channel only system-the full frequency system would indicate receiving bars but just past by every time with out stopping. If control only works then it's control only.
After removing my scanner in and out of the house trying to receive Montclair in my car the BNC end of my home scanner cable snapped off. This is a special Times Microwave cable I purchased a few years ago to assist with reception. Can anyone fix the BNC connection for me?

Montclair signal strength

I have noticed a wide variation in signal strength for the Montclair system. I generally use a BCD396T as a mobile and a BCD996T as my base. For example: On Bloomfield ave , the signal is good from the center of Caldwell, in the area of Forte's restaurant, and begins to degrade as you pass thru Verona, going east. On the Montclair-Verona border, which is on the top of the mountain, the system is barely heard. Once you go down the hill into Montclair, the signal improves, just as you get to Valley road.
The same can be said for the West Orange system. Another example:I have programmed scanners for the Verona police and Verona Rescue squad. Both agencies use the BC 796 with antennas on the roof.At police headquarters the West Orange system is not picked up at all. At the squad building, which is on the top of a mountain, it comes in rather well. So it may not always be the radio.
