Tractor-Trailer, Sedan Collide On I-270 In Rockville

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Two people were pulled from their car after it collided with a tractor-trailer hauling trash on northbound Interstate 270 just north of the Route 28 exit in Rockville Friday night.

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Two people were pulled from their car after it collided with a tractor-trailer hauling trash on northbound Interstate 270 just north of the Route 28 exit in Rockville Friday night.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer said all northbound lanes were closed for a time after the crash at about 6:30 p.m.

A Chrysler Sebring and a tractor-trailer hauling solid waste collided. The rear wheels of the truck ended up on top of the car.

The driver and passenger of the car were stuck, but somehow they survived.

"The occupants were conscious and alert through the whole thing," Piringer said. "Very lucky, very lucky. They got out of it without any serious injuries."

It took firefighters an hour to free the passenger from the mangled car. Heavy cranes had to be brought in to lift the truck off the car. It took another hour before the driver could be removed.

Both, a man and woman, were taken to hospitals in good condition.

The backup on I-270 stretched for miles.

"You just have to be patient," one driver said. "The police redirected us, turned everyone around on local lanes and back off of the exit. You just have to listen and follow directions."

The lanes of I-270 were re-opened within three hours.

The driver of the truck was not hurt.
