I have read that Fairfax county utilizes two talkgroups on the Montgomery system for greater radio coverage at great falls. On the Fairfax system they are labeled GF1 and GF2. Does anyone know what talkgroups they are on the Montgomery trunk system?

I was under the impression that Montgomery County uses VHF in the Great Falls area for better coverage. Interesting.

You may be correct. The radios in Fairfax are probably dual band and the fairfax radios probably go off the 800 mhz band and switch to vhf. Do you know what those frequencies are?

Note sure. I think it used to be 153.950, and might still be. It can be patched to other TGs as necessary. 73-J is the Zone number and channel position.

Could it be the Marine 1&2 channels on the montgomery system or are they used for something else?

Marine channels are the WFM marine frequencies (channels 16 and 22A I think) - that are used to liaison with pleasure boats. They also have an interoperability zone that includes additional marine channels.

The same talkgroups. The only place that the Great Falls talkgroups are carried in the Montgomery County radios are in the Fairfax County zones (4X); we don't carry them in our zones (7X). From our perspective the GF talkgroups are Fairfax talkgroups; they just happen to reside on the Montgomery County system.

Our 800 MHz system provides better coverage on the river than the Fairfax radio system (the river is our responsibility not theirs, so that makes sense), but we still have areas where coverage is weak so we use our VHF V7B channel (153.950) to help in those areas. Normally V7B is patched to 7B OPS, but when we have an incident operating in an area of the river where coverage is a problem we move the V7B channel to the talkgroup that incident is operating on (frequently 7G, but not exclusively). All of our river units are equipped with multi-band radios (7/8/VHF), mobiles and portables, so this works well for us.

We don't use any Marine VHF channels for operating in the Great Falls area of the river or above typically; they are mainly used regionally below the falls, basically in the tidal Potomac.

Any idea what the talkgroup I'd numbers are on the Montgomery system? Fairfax had great falls rescue on 41 Lima today. Did not have a radio for Montgomery system with me today.
