Craziest thing. I put my new Hg vertical base scanner antenna on a horizontal level and now I am getting the Montreal Fire channels, but only in the morning and many times the voice sounds like it is underwater.

Suggesting you need to re-orient the antenna , WTH is Hg ? Can you point to a picture or URL. Google is not feeling the love ???
Do you mean simplex or the trunk system ?

I added an inexpensive pre amp between my coax and unit and now the fire channels are flowing like water. Go figure!
BTW, I am using the small inexpensive pre-amp without any power supply.

If it has no power supply then it is not an amplifier. It might be some type of filter, but an amplifier has to have a power supply.

The power supply may be a battery instead of a wall wart. But an amplifier has to have some energy source to amplify the input signal.
