Hello,
I am wondering on your views as to whether it is ethical to compile and use mbelib in the United States. It most likely violates patents held by DVSI, but on the other hand, would DVSI have an issue with you doing this? I run into the same moral dilemma with VLC, which is the best program I have found to play and convert audio and video. Yet the avcodec infringes on numerous software patents in the U.S. I once actually contacted MPEG-LA (the patent pool for the MPEG codecs) and asked them if they would sell me the encode and decode patents at the standard rate of $2 each. I got a reply from them saying that they do not deal with end users, which suggests to me that they do not really have an issue with me using VLC.
