More AA Co questions

A couple of questions off the top of my head:

1. What is 'talkaround'? They sometimes ask each other to switch to talkaround. Whats talkaround used for? What talkgroup # is it? (They aint referring to nextel, are they?)

2. I know about all the units like 3B1, 3B2, 3A2, etc. But what about units like 331, or Eastern 86? Who are they? More importantly, how many of them are there during any given shift, and what is their purpose?

Talkaround talkgroups are listed in the database as the various district Auxilliary Channels...2096, 2128, 2160 and 2192. They use these talkgroups for everything from chatting to discussing anything they don't want to tie up the main district talkgroup with.

The three-digit numbers are generally the supervisory personnel. I'm not quite sure about the format that uses "District-XX." They all seem to fall in the 7X, 8X and 9X fields.

Oh, i see. I had the auxillary district frequencies programmed, i just didnt know thats what they were used for.

Anyone know the answer to the other questions?

I found it much easier to follow conversations by programming the talkaround talkgroups right next to the main district channel they belong to. So when an Eastern unit (or any district unit) says to go to talkaround, it's just one click away. AA County uses different terms..."Go to talkaround" or they simply say, "Switch over" or "Change over." I've done the same with other nets like Baltimore City where their Zone C serves the same purpose. They say, "Go to C." Being one click away makes sure you don't miss the beginnings of conversations when they switch. In DC, the police net uses the term, "Go to TAC" to mean the same thing.

By the way, to get a handle on how many three digit cars are working in a particular AA County district, listen to the dispatcher at about 7:30am, 3:30pm or 11:30pm. They'll do a roll call of all the units on that shift by telling them to go 10-42 (off duty). That will give you a good feel for how many units are assigned to each area (A, B, C and D units and 3-digit units) within the district.
