The article is interesting but flawed in a couple places.

The Article said:
A digital system must be in place by 2013 to meet federal emergency response standards, said Fire Chief Keith Hackl of the Warrensburg Fire Protection District.
If I'm not mistaken, the only requirement by 2013 is narrowbanding ... Analog works just fine narrowbanded.

The Article said:
The city is going to a repeater system meaning messages will go from a radio to a satellite or tower and back to other radios
A satellite is an awfully long round-trip for a radio transmission ;)

Your right Chief Hackl doesn't know what he is talking about. But it is possible Motorola is telling everybody this so they can sell the higher prices systems!! They are having trouble staying afloat these days so they need help.

They might be calling them satellites, but in reality they are probably more like microwaves, and linked repeaters, that have dishes that look like satellites lol

Effingham County is rumored to be going soon, very soon!
