Not sure if anyone knows but - most departments are now updating to the APX N70 radios and will soon be switching to full encryption. AJ PD will be going encrypted soon - as they just got some new radios and are slowly switching to encrypted channels. They are still in the clear ( somewhat ) for now but who knows for how much longer. Heard dispatch today ask who has the “new encrypted channel one” programmed in their radios.

I’m sure Gilbert and Chandler will soon follow.

Haven’t heard AJPD main dispatch in almost 2 hours so the change might already be here.

XTS5000’s can even do AES256 encryption if you wanted to break down encryption. I know that wasn’t the point of the thread - it just happens to coincide that AJPD got those new N70 radios now seem to be fully encrypted. Most departments out here seem to be getting rid of their APX6000/8000’s for the N70/NEXT radios and switching on encryption. We shall soon see if more departments follow.

The new NEXT radios are programmed remotely by Motorola. Allows an agency to change a TG to ENC within an hour if warranted. Technology has advanced to the point an agency tech submits what needs changed and it’s done to all radios with a short time frame.

As officers travel to conferences, that allows agencies to view this technology. Once seen, agencies push for funding. The ENC aspect is another plus.

A few notes from yesterday -- Thursday, December 5:

There seemed to be regular traffic on TOPAZ 3107 AJ PD up through the 0600 hour before largely disappearing.

After 0700, it sounded like maybe the dispatcher was for a short time simul-selected to include 3107 since I only heard the dispatcher's side there.

At 1156 hours, P92 did a radio check on 3107. Dispatch told the unit said she was on the old channel and to "...go back to encrypted, please..."

A possible dispatch RID (31402) now seems to talk on encrypted TG 3116.

At this point - only towns / areas that the local PD is NOT encrypted in the Valley is

- PHX PD
- Gilbert PD
- Chandler PD
- MCSO
- DPS
- Avondale PD
- Surprise PD
- Glendale PD

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong on that list.

Does the encryption setting for the Tempe PD Dispatch channels in the RR database need to be updated, then?

What is wrong with asking about something that is considered publicly available information that can be acquired by a simple FOIA/Public Records request?

Dispatchers have better things to do then be asked about their government radio system. If the dispatcher follows agency protocol, questions referred shift supervisor. The supervisor should question the question and ask why you want to know and what criminal activities the callers scanner are used for.
