Well, another interesting pre-dawn LW listening session here this morning. Logged nearly 100 NDBs. No more than turned on the rig and pulled in YSK 208 in Hudson Bay Nunavut... knew right then it was going to be a good morning.

Heard DF 350 Deer Lake Newfoundland and PN 360 Port Menier upper Quebec but that was it for the DX activity to the east.

Stations to the south were conspicuous by their absence. CLB 216 Carolina Beach, usually strong in here, was very weak. This time the action was all to the north and northwest.

Heard QD 284 The Pas and YQ 305 Churchill both Manitoba and VC 317 LaRonge Sasketchewan all in the DGPS band but coming in clear through the warble.

DX shot of the morning was ZP 368 Sandspit in the Queen Charlotte Islands off the coast of British Columbia... that's a 2300+ mile haul. Also heard in B.C. was NY 350 Enderby.

Other Canadians logged were: WG 248 Winnipeg, YBV 370 Berens River, and YL 395 Lynn Lake all Manitoba and YLJ 406 Meadow Lake Sasketchewan.

USA beacons heard: 3 in Minnesota LXL 359, DL 379, AIT 397 and 2 in Montana BKU 344 and GDV 410; as well as AA 365 Fargo ND.

The propagation was, well, HF like. Heard many NDBs here in Michigan, plus Ohio and nearby Ontario all undoubtedly groundwave but the long haul stuff to the northwest... my guess is skywave. What do you think?

What a difference a day makes... no DX out west this morning.

Instead, the DX catch of the morning was over 2000 miles to the NNE... SF 382 Sondrestromfjord Greenland.

This NDB has historical significance as it is located at a former WW II U.S. airbase known as Bluie West 8 (BW-8) on the route across the North Atlantic to Europe. The base is located at the end of a long fjord. Pilots had to first find and then fly up the narrow fjord to the base in rotten WX, disaster lurking on either side.

For a first hand account of this flying, check out Fate Is the Hunter by Ernest K. Gann. It is a must-read if you are interested in aviation.

Don't know how much power ZP runs, could only find that it is a "class M" NDB.

It's in a good location, right on the ocean, so likely an excellent ground plane.
I used to be able to pick up a NDB out of Hawaii from here in California. That was many years ago, not sure if it's still there or not.

Went digging through a box of some old obsolete approach plates and according to a Nav Canada Flight Supplement, class M is 50 watts to less than 2000 watts. Doesn't pin it down any closer than that. Looks like the NDB itself is located 11nm roughly southeast of the airport. Right on the ocean as you mentioned. Went to the internet for a satellite view and the tower looks substantial.
