Performance is still being tweaked, so until I have actual production units, I'm going to hold off on making that kind of competitive analysis. However, I was getting clear hits in a very RF unfriendly environment (outside our offices near DFW airport) at about 200 ft from a 390 mW UHF HT on a early sample. YMMV and will depend on background RF, antennas, xmit power, etc.
In casual testing (i.e. taking it home over weekends to play...er...evaluate performance), I've gotten hits at all the major chain stores (Target, WalMart, etc), drive-thru windows, and a couple of mobile hits from delivery and tow trucks. Haven't had the bad fortune to pull up to an accident or other emergency scene, so no public safety hits. I have not gone hunting for hits...just have happened to catch whatever was nearby where I happened to be. At Arlington Ham-Com, I finally had to turn it off. Everyone talking to each other on their own "secret" simplex channels was too much (but got hits on 2-meter, 440, UHF business band, 900 MHz business band, and VHF business).
As to digital, it depends. The scanner won't be able to get a hit from digital cell phones because of the way the transmitted signal is sliced (and, of course, other than Nextel the frequencies are blocked). It does get hits from FSK/MSK-type and similar "analog modulated" digital.
Sorry, but only a charge jack, no drop-in type charge terminals this time around.
