Hello everyone!
I am also applying for the short wave permit to carry a scanner in my vehicle. Here's my question....
I am a licensed Pilot and during instruction (some 15 years ago now) we were told that our license also acted as a radio station operators permit. Years ago they used to be two separate certificates but they now assume a valid pilot certificate to be your operating permit.
Does anyone know if this is accepted by the MSP? If so do I need the permit to carry a scanner and if so on the application under license held (Novice, Tech, General) what would apply?
Thanks in advance for any help!
ALSO...
Does anyone know where I can get a list of Fire Station codes(i.e. "70 central on the air for station 71") for my county (Lenawee)?

I would apply for the permit to be on the safe side. It's pain less and takes maybe 3-6 weeks to get it.

As for the station numbers, they are in the database under Lenewee Co. go to the bottom of the page.

LENAWEE COUNTY FD STATION NUMBERS

70 - CENTRAL DISPATCH
71 - ADRIAN CITY
72 - ADRIAN TWP.
73 - BLISSFIELD
74 - BRITTION / RIDGEWAY TWP.
75 - CLAYTON
76 - CLINTON
77 - FAIRFIELD TWP.
78 - PALMYRA
79 - DEERFIELD
80 - TECUMSEH CIVIL DEFENSE & EOC
81 - RAISIN TWP
82 - HUDSON
84 - MORENCI
85 - CAMBRIDGE TWP.
86 - TECUMSEH
87 - RIGA
88 - MADISON TWP.
89 - ADDISON
90 - SAND LAKE

You can do a google search on the law regarding Michigan. There are ONLY three ways that you can carry a scanner legally in michigan 1) Must be a BONAFIDE POLICE OFFICER 2) An Amatuer Radio Operator with a TECH license or above 3) Be issued a Permit from the DEPARTMENT OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN

If you dont have at least one of those, your scanner will be confinscated if they stop you and you have it with you.

hope that helps

. . . .

A small bit of confusion.

In the past a private pilot needed a restricted radio telephone operator's license (or higher) to operate the aviation radio (same is true of marine radio). This is the same license you needed to be a radio operator (not engineer) at a commercial broadcast station. This is a FCC license.

These days (don't know when the change was) you do not need a Restricted radiotelephone license for aircraft operated within the US. You still need it if you fly out of the country.

So no, your FAA Pilot's license is NOT your radio license.

When I was first sworn in back in the early 1950s, you had to have a restricted operators license to talk on the police or anyother radio. Not long after that they changed the rule that the station license was all that was required.

There was no exam, but there was a fee, I think $5.00. Long time ago.
