I went through my Group ID File (GID) from UniTrunker for the site labeled as 6038.
I have 70 or so that I am concerned about right now. I was wondering what would be the appropriate way to share this info with those who care so as to facilitate getting the Unidentifieds IDENTIFIED !!

I am willing to email the txt file to anyone who cares to see if they can help.

Thank you !!!

System ID

Sam the "6038" you referred to is the system ID for VIPER in your neck of the woods. There are four of them used in different zones across the state.

I haven't used Unitrunker, but I thought it would also put up some sort of site number in addition to the system ID.

I know it may be time consuming, but if you haven't, try the RR DB for VIPER and see if any of those come up.

Good Luck!!! I wished I lived close enough to help out.

Thanks for the input. I use UniTrunker to monitor a control channel ...868.7875 to be exact in Raleigh. I run it for weeks and check out various log files the program creates.
One such file *.gid is the file that is created which contains all of the Group ID's it logs...hence the extension (GID). The specific file name is Moto6038.GID

Anyway the only reason I am posting my request about needing help to identify the Group ID's logged is that when the program logs a TalkGroup ID that it does not know it adds a descriptor entry of "Unid?" on that particular line with the TalkGroup ID it logged.
Below is a one line example of such a log entry:
37520,0,0,0xFF80FF,"Unid?",20071119184753,20080426100529,50,1318,""

The first number (37520) is the TalkGroup ID it logged.....notice the description it associates with that particular TalkGroup ID (Unid?) and then another important entry is that last number...(1318) which means that UniTrunker logged 1,318 instances of that particualr TalkGroup ID being transmitted as per the Control Channel of 868.7875.

So I take that Unidentified TalkGroup ID of 37520 and check the database of RR and I see that there is not such entry for that TalkGroup ID. Now I am presented with a situtation where by in order for me to find out what TalkGroup ID 37520 is, I need to find someone in the know which is why I posted a request for help that you replied to.

Obviously 37520 is in use as indicated by the large number of hits (1318)...so it is just a matter of finding out what service is using it. This is why I like monitoring the Control Channel for my area so I can see if there is anything I am missing.

I hope I have explained myself here.

I appreciate all the help that everyone has given me on RR. The RR Community really helps everyone and I hope I can help someone like you guys have helped me !!

With all this in mind I still need help identifying Talk Group ID's. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I will respect your request to not disclose the source of any help I receive if I am so asked.

Thanks for the detailed response and explanation of Unitrunker for a non-user like me (read: I'm a real dummy when it comes to some things :) ).

Sam - Consider posting the UniTrunker file as a text attachment to a post on this or the Viper sticky thread.

Not sure if UniTrunker is able to sort the TG I-Ds, but a sort will also provide some additional guidance on who is assigned the talkgroups, since there is some rhyme and reason to the assignment on I-Ds.

The file that contains the Unidentified Group ID's is the same file that the program keeps all of the Group ID's. What I do is open the file in Notepad and pull out the lines that contain the Unidentified. All of the Group ID's are sorted initially so what I pull is sorted thus making the new file sorted since I cut and paste.

So the file is a simple txt file I have that I peridically update. I do not mind posting that txt file here as an attachement. I guess it is okay with the moderator to do so. (this is your key to chime in moderator !)

Anyway I look forward to doing what ever suits everyone. I do not mind posting the unidentified but just want to make sure how to do it since it would probably be a repeated posting periodically and I feel that I need input from the moderator before I do so.

Keep in touch !!

Sam, when I have lots of spare time I edit the *.RID file to reflect the user's ID on individual radios. That way when unidentified TGs pops up, I can either spot it on the UT screen or look
in the RID file and do a search for the TG. When an individual radio 'affiliates' on the system, the last TG used is shown in the text line for each radio.

Example radio ID line:

30269,0,0,0x000000,"SBImo",20071119210139,20080430124528,37520,50,474,""

In bold type is 37520. That is the last TG that radio used. I have logged that radio using SBI talkgroups so I labeled it SBImo (SBI Mobile). Labeling all known radios can take some of the guesswork out of it.

I also edit the color of talkgroups and radio IDs so they are visibly easier to filter through as UniTrunker and Trunker4Windows is running. This takes a LOT of time but the effort pays off. Example: in HEX is 0x80FFFF which is blue. When that TG pops up on the UT screen it will be blue. Use a color such as white or pink for UNidentified TGs so they will be easy to spot when they pop up on the screen and you can glance at the USER to see who it is.

Here is a screen shot of UniTrunker running with colors and text files edited. Note the right hand column has enc on one of the RPD TG's...that TG is encrypted at the time of the snapshot.

Data Slicer and Scanner

I'm thinking about getting a data slicer and running UniTrunker (or similar tracking software)...I have a Pro-2052 and BC-785 (with card)...Does anyone have any suggestions about:
1.) Where / What type of slicer to get?
2.) Would the 2052 (with it's OK, but not glamourous reception) be enough scanner or should I use the 785?
3.) I can work a soldering iron, but I won't be making a living as an electrician's mate anytime soon, can anybody point me to a good step-by-step instruction sheet / website (with pictures) of how to tap the discriminator?
4.) I know the slicer / scanner combo can only monitor one Control Channel at a time, but how easy is it to change Control Channels? I can get 3 or 4 sites around here.

Thanks in advance for all help...

Assuming you have already checked your unidentified talkgroups against the RR database, why don't you just post them here so we can help you?

All of these were logged by UniTrunker and had a significant amount of hits on each talkgroup so they are valid...just not sure what they are. I suspect Civil Air Patrol.

Here are some new ones that I cannot ID. These are recent, from
April and May of this year. In bold text is the date of the most recent
activity on a specific talkgroup (May 1st 2008 in that example).
