Maybe I'm not clear on pursuit policy, but why would they risk a dangerous pursuit like this one, where the speeds were so high, for a gas drive off???

Yeah its a good thing that they did get him he wasn't a very nice guy. And yes they do chase for anything out here. Gas drive offs are the best bet for a runner out here. Last year sometime There was a gas drive in Ft. Morgan and Brush PD picked up the chase They chase these two guys till the Neb. State line were they called it. Guess there is nothing better to do out here

MORGAN COUNTY, Colo. -- A man being pursued because he was suspected of leaving a gas station without paying for gas led the Morgan County sheriff on a high-speed chase that ended when he rolled out of control and accidentally shot himself.
John Wade Biggs, 31, had to be airlifted to Northern Colorado Medical Center to be treated for a gunshot wound to the lower right abdomen.
Morgan County Sheriff Jim Crone spotted Biggs' vehicle just after 7 a.m. Thursday and believed that it matched the pickup truck that was involved in a "gas drive-off" 30 minutes earlier.
Someone at the Wiggins Junction truck stop at Colorado Highway 39 and Highway 34 called police to inform them that a driver of a pickup truck left without paying for gas.
While on routine patrol, Crone spotted the suspected vehicle going eastbound on Interstate 76 and tried to pull the car over. But the driver refused to stop and began accelerating, Crone said.
The sheriff said he pursued the pickup truck for more than 10 miles at speeds of more than 100 mph.
The driver exited the interstate and went southbound on Colorado Highway 63, where he ran over spike strips that had been deployed by a Colorado State Patrol trooper. The strips deflated the suspect's two front tires, but he continued to flee south on Highway 63 and then west on Washington County Road 51, Crone said.
The suspect then veered off the county road and began driving across farm and pasture ground, the sheriff said. During the off-road pursuit, Crone attempted several PIT maneuvers to get him to stop.
During one PIT maneuver, the pickup truck rolled completely over and then drove away. Crone's last PIT maneuver forced the pickup truck to flip on its side and stop.
Officers rushed to the scene and took Biggs into custody, which was when he told them he had shot himself when he rolled his vehicle.
Biggs is being kept under law enforcement watch at Northern Colorado Medical Center. Once released, he will be held without bond.
Biggs faces multiple warrants from Mesa County Sheriff’s Office for theft, harassment domestic violence, violation of a protection order, defrauding an innkeeper and fuel piracy. He also has a charge of theft from the San Miguel County Sheriff's Office and from Farmington, N.M.
Additional charges from Morgan County, including theft and vehicular eluding, will be filed in connection with Thursday's chase.
During the pursuit, which covered 25-30 miles, the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the Logan County Sheriff's Office and the Colorado State Patrol all assisted, Crone said. Washington County EMS responded to treat the suspect.
No one other than Biggs was injured, and no other law enforcement vehicles were damaged.
