Does anyone know what - exactly - a trooper on "DOT shift" actually *does*?

Yeah, this is just one of those idle thoughts that keeps running through my head when I hear them in the mornings....! :)

My assumption is these are the guys who get to park at the beginning of a construction zone and leave their lights on to get idi... er... drivers to slow down. Aside from perhaps chasing after the occasional dummy who can't comprehend what all the lights mean, is that all they do? Is it actually a full shift?!?

That would have to get boring in a hurry...

Perhaps they drag along a ton of paperwork they didn't get finished from their regular patrol shifts?

Sounds like you nailed the job description. I first saw troopers in AZ doing that on construction sites in the early 90's. They'd sit by the road hoods up and lights on.

If it were me, I'd be working paperwork and a book on CD at the same time. Books on CD are great for making a long drive better.

When I lived in Massachusetts, this would be a "paid detail" for an off-duty officer. Time-and-a-half and paid for by the contractor.
