My town has recently switched to this new system "800mhz p25" it was doing fine for about a 1-1/2 months when then problems started, at the time we had bad weather come in (a northern cold front) witch seemed to have messed with the system if that is even possable? The towere is located about 3-4 miles east of town and while in town we have no reception on the radios they just say out of range and its a hit or miss some parts of town it works and others it doses not. But if your any where to the south of the tower it is great reception no problems like if your in town!! i guess im at a loss to why the system is doing this and if weather has an affect on the system thank you

To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Several things could have happened. Wind/lightning may have damaged the antenna so it no longer works properly. Wind/lightning may have damaged the coax causing it to be loose so the connection is intermittent or possibly allowing water to contaminate it causing much greater loss. These could also have caused the radio to have damaged the final so it may be putting out only a small portion of the necessary signal strength. Your town should have a qualified radio tech and qualified tower/antenna person check out the system and return it to operating specs.

As far as the system, Motorola made several generations of digital trunking systems, if it's a current version Astro 25 (V8.xx IIRC), than yes, it's a decent system IF it's installed with the needed number of transmit and receive sites for the desired geographic coverage.
No radio system is "good" if it doesn't have the infrastructure needed to provide coverage where the users are. The standard most agencies use is 98 percent body worn portable for street level coverage for public safety. Anything more is better, less is not suitable for life safety communications.
