• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

    If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

    To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

If there is conventional systems for you to monitor, it'll work great.

If you want to listen to trunked systems, you'll be breaking the law as well as risking the radio getting "bricked" if it's not set up to monitor correctly (and I would bet that 99% are not).

Oh, it's rather tall :D plus it's only one band VS many bands that a scanner can cover. You'd be paying top dollar for P25 on a scanner, but you can also listen to the many VHF & UHF P25 frequencies.

What is the HOST? How about the DSP? What about the flashcode? If you can't get these questions answered then you should not purchase this unit. If you don't know what these terms are, then you should not purchase one until you do. Do you know what it takes to program one of these rigs? If not, then it takes $$$.

Dont have the slightest idea what goes into setting one of these up. I was looking at some radios on ebay and notice this one. I think I will stick with the Gre and Unidens, etc..for the time being.

How does this radio http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220210777910&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=012 measure against other digital handhelds such as the PSR500, Pro96, and the Uniden396. Also is this a good price for a P25 Motorola.

<insert "get a scanner" comment here>

Unless you really need to transmit on an 800MHz system, and you have or can get the software to program it, a scanner is a better investment. Between the cost of the radio and the cost of the software from Moto, you'd have spend the same amount on a PSR500.

Looks like it's programmed for the San Diego RCS based on the screenshot. Anyway somebody else bought it and as other said, it would be much easier to stick with a scanner for doing trunking systems.
