The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I know the following two agencies have the VSELP version of Motorola ASTRO systems:

- Memphis
- Cleveland

Are there/were there any others?

Warren County, MS Moto ASTRO VSELP (Hopefully not too much longer though!)

Memphis is about to dump thiers and is getting a non VSELP ASTRO which will also be used by Shelby County, so thats another EDACS thats going byebye too.... Unkown currently for sure if the SC/Mem system will be regular ASTRO or ASTRO-25

If they are updating the system and staying with Motorols, then it will be Astro-25 (P-25) since there is no such thing as "Non-VSELP Astro" that is not p-25!

I am guessing that he was referring to the type of system. In otherwords, a Smartnet/Smartzone system using P-25 modulation or an APCO-25 system. Hence the Astro vs Astro-25 comment.

Correct.

ASTRO comes in Two variations- ASTRO and ASTRO-25.
The older ASTRO format has two flavors- ASTRO VSELP and ASTRO which has IMBE iether in full time or mixed mode... with an 3.6kbps CC
ASTRO-25 is only that- Pure digital APCO-P-25 with an 9.6kbps CC

Of the flavors in usage,.. most are ASTRO (IMBE), with a few older VSELP systems still around. ASTRO-25 is starting to gain in usage and will be the only format in usage on the new 700 MHz systems if they use a Motorola system.

You are adding a lot of implied meaning to the names which does not exist.

Astro, Astro-VSELP, and Astro-25.

Astro was the original name for Motorola's Digital product using VSELP.
It was NEVER called Astro-VSELP.

It was used both on conventional and SmartNet/SmartZone (3600bps control channel) trunking systems. All system could be digital only or mixed analog digital depending on system desig. It could also be secure/encrypted.

Astro-25 was the name for Motorola's Digital product using P-25 CAI (IMBE).
It was NEVER called Astro-IMBE.

It also is used on both conventional and SmartNet/SmartZone (3600 bps control channel) trunking systems. All system could be digital only or mixed analog digital depending on system desig. It could also be secure/encrypted.

Astro-25 also works on P-25 Trunking (9600bps control channel) systems. This includes single site and multi-site. It also supports encryption. In conventional mode it can be mixed-mode (analog/Digital), but I believe the trunking systems have to be all P25 voice channles.

Remeber, Brand names like "Astro", Astro-25", etc., are anything the company wants then to be and may or may not carry the same meaning all the time.

You are much better off understanding what the system is and using those terms to describe it!

Thus the 2 (TWO) versions of ASTRO... ASTRO and ASTRO-25

We the folks that monitor these systems add the distinctions on the Trunking Systems of the flavors IMBE, and VSELP to distinguish between the original ASTRO format... technically you can break it down to ASTRO: Mixed Mode VSELP/Analog, Mixed Mode IMBE (P-25 CAI)/Analog ... Those cover the ASTRO using an 3.6kbps CC.
Then we have the newer ASTRO-25 which uses an 9.6kbps CC and is a fully digital system.

And if you want to get really nitty gritty, the only APCO P-25 conventional by motorola is the ASTRO-25 solution.... Which as we all know is an multifaceted expandable, and upgradable, fully interoperable solution that can be used for anything from a single site conventional VHF up to a linked statewide conventional multi band system. It also has the ability to be linked seamlessly to any ASTRO-25 TRS, or an true APCO-P-25 TRS that might be produced by another vendor.

I think Hamilton Ontario also has a VSELP system, but I've not heard much about it.

Hamilton had conventional channels that were vselp but I believe they switched over to imbe when they rolled these frequencies into a smartzone system which was separate from the Region's system. Hard to tell as all activity on the system is/was encrypted.

Trenton, NJ VSELP

The capital city of Trenton, NJ has a Type II mixed-mode VSELP system that is surrently in use. Rumors were that it will merge with Ewing's new 500Mhz Smartzone AES encrypted system in the future.

The fire and city services talkgroups are analog and all of the Police talkgroups are VSELP.

The Georgia World Congress Center Police in Atlanta use this type of system but will start using the Statewide Digital System as soon as its up, which should be about 5 years or so.

I am curious where you heard this from?

It would make sense to me that if they were going to upgrade their system they would pay for the firmware uplifts to IMBE before they moved their whole system down to UHF. The costs associated with buying all new portables, mobiles, and changing all the repeater sites would be astronomical compared to the firmware upgrades.

I believe that in order to 'upgrade' from VSELP to P-25 modulation, you need to replace everything. It's not just a firmware upgrade.

Someone please correct me if I'm incorrect.

I am not sure about infrastructure but I know for sure with portables and mobiles they can be upgraded in the field with a firmware upgrade same as if they were just being reflashed.

Although some of those astro sabers must be getting up there in age...

Whether a field radio can be firmware upgraded to IMBE is dependent on the size of the VOCON. Either 512k or 1MEG. If the radio indicates "1MEG" on its tag it can be. 99% of the radios out there with VSELP are ASTRO Sabers, many of which are 512k models and require replacement.

Same goes for the ASTRO Spectra. It must have the 1MEG VOCON to permit being upgraded to IMBE.

If the products are digital capable they say ASTRO on them. What are people supposed to use as a genralized term to refer to digitally equipped units?

I have an Astro Saber with a 512k Vocon that encodes and decodes IMBE just fine. The only feature that the 512k vocons have trouble with is true ASTRO trunking with 9600 kps control channels.

It is true that you will not likely find many 1 MEG VSLEP vocons but that is only because when 1 MEG became standard VSLEP was on its way out. The only requirements for a "digital capable" motorola radio to do IMBE is that it have high enough level of firmware/DSP and that it be flashed appropriately.
