To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Ok I have a couple of these Motorola antenna matchers. Specifically the HAB1004A for 33-43 MHz using a 78.25 inch whip. The manual below is similar.

Questions:
1) By what principal do these antenna matchers work?
2) Will they work with a base loaded (NMO xx) antenna?
3) If used with an NMO mount, can I install the matcher remotely from the NMO base by using 1/2 wave of cable in between?

In most cases the recommended whip length is about mid range for the useable frequency range of the matcher. The matcher also needs a specific length of coax so its just providing a little better match over about twice or three times the normal range of a stock 1/4 wave whip. I think there are too many variables to say if it would be useable with a base load or any other kind of antenna.

I am thinking the theory is somewhat like the matcher below. I have no desire to use a 1/4 wave whip, but would like to increase bandwidth of an NMO base loaded.

Have you considered a laird wide band NMO? They make them in several VHF lo ranges that cover about 7MHz of band width and they have similar band width to the Motorola matcher.

I found these the CW27 may be useful at 2.9 MHz BW. I need something to cover 43 MHz and above as well. Are these the antennas? I wonder if these are the ones shipping with Loctite?

Or there are several broad band military whips that cover about 30 to 90MHz with no tuning and they could probably be slightly modified to cover 10m through at least 6m.
I am mounting on an SUV, Ford Expedition that offers little in the way of mounting a military type whip mount.

Those are them. I have an ex CHP CW37 (in black) that covers 37-46MHz with a great match. Those show up on eBay occasionally for good prices. I also have two CWB27s for CB/10m use and they are excellent antennas.
