To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I would like to run this amplified speaker off of the earphone jack of an FRS radio. I want to be able to use it as a wireless PA system. What kind of matching transformer arrangement would I need? When I hook it up directly I can barely hear anything, I'm assuming it's due to the mis matched impedance.

Motorola amplified speakers require a 1V P-P line level audio signal to operate properly, and the level of that signal must be externally controlled in standard installations, like from the radio that's generating the audio signal.

The output of the FRS radio earphone jack likely isn't enough to drive the amplifier internal to the speaker.
Couple of questions, forgive me if you've already done this:
You do have the speaker supplied with 12 volts DC, correct?
You did check the little volume pot on the inside? I think you can access it with a long "tweaker" screwdriver through a hole on the back, but it's been a while, so I may be forgetting.
Have you tried feeding it with a scanner external speaker output to see if it works? Start with the scanner volume turned all they way down and slowly turn it up...

I haven't pulled the cover off the speaker yet but this model has an external volume control, perhaps there is another inside, I'll check but it isn't accessible through a hole. Do you know if there is some kind of small step up transformer that would increase the voltage to get to the 1v p-p input needed or do I have to come up with a small preamp?

I do have an external 12volts hooked up and I have tried the speaker out on a ham radio so I know the amp/speaker is good.
