To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am looking to buy a VHF Motorola MT2000. From the research I have done, it seems like not many of them do splinter frequencies. I am looking at one with model # H01KDD9AA4AN and serial # 335ACE0963 Z. Does anybody know how to determine which MT2000 will do splinter frequencies based on model number and / or serial number? Thanks for the help.

The HT-1000 and the MT, MTS MTSX series all use the same RF board. The only differences are the controller boards and cases. Thats why you can take a RF board from a MT put it in a MTSX case after removing the useless 800 board and with the right software turn it into a MTSX of a different band. There are limits of what controllers you can use due to M creating copy protection or reprogramming of controllers after 1995

Firmware dependent. MT2000's with firmware higher than 2.11 will do splinters and it seems to coincide with manufacture date. Mid 1998 seemed to be when MT2000s started shipping with 2.11 which supported splinter channels on VHF. Based upon the serial number provided, that radio hails from 2002 (ACE indicating early 2002) provided the controller board wasn't swapped with an older version. Lots of parts swapping with Jedi radios. Put the radio in self-test mode and verify the firmware version.

Remember too that MT2000s, unlike MTS2000s, used masked ROM for firmware and could not be upgraded later in the field, so short of replacing a controller board with a newer version board, whatever is in the radio, you're stuck with (not that one can buy Flashport upgrades for MTS2000s now anyway!)

Highest version I've ever seen on an MT2000 was 2.13 on a NOS VHF MT2000 with a manufacture date of January 2004.

I thought that just applied to HT1000s
Visar's as well. A DN Visar will do splinters, an AN or BN won't.
The one exception to these "rules" are JT1000s. Despite being made into the early 2000s, the firmware never supported splinter channel operation despite the later made JTs having the same RF boards from the Jedi family that did. Most likely due to the "special" controller board supporting FPP not having enough space to support a firmware re-write, and like all closed-architecture Jedi radios, what it's "born with" is what you get.

This might explain why many of these VHF JT1000s ended up on the surplus market. They won't even work on the VTAC's for mutual aid.

So it’s possible the ACE model I found might do splinter channels as long as all of the parts are original?

Yes. Put it in test mode by turning the radio on, within 10 seconds, depress side button 1 (directly below the PTT), 5 times in succession. The radio will emit a tone, display SELF TEST, then scroll the model, serial and fimrware version. So long as it's 2.11 or higher, it will do splinters.
