• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I recently acquired 10 mtx-900s units and only two of them have the capability to talk radio to radio. The rest of the units will have the transmit light flash on a few of the channels, but only once in a great while willI each of them communincate with another radio.

Almost every time the talk button is pressed I get that BAAHHHH sound followed by static. I know that these units were working previously.

The history of the radios is that they were on a radio to radio link with repeaters and also could be used on the trunked system that was installed.

I know that the baahhhh sound is an illegal operation, but im looking for some guidance on how to get the units working properly. Any suggetions or checks that need to be performed on the units?

I have not checked yet to verify that they are programmed correctly, but I don know that almost all of them were still being used before I received them.

Would you recommend that I order the program cable and start looking at that being the issue? I am not familiar with these units at all and will need to locate some other documentation before I go hooking up the units to try and program them..

By "programmed properly", I mean, those radios are going to be operated in a licensed service, be it a commercial service, or amateur service. As such, they need to be programmed in a specific manner consistent with the service that your license to operate conveys. If they're just random radios you picked up and expect them to work like FRS or CB radios, that would be an incorrect assumption. They are likely trunked radios, which requires affiliation with a trunked repeater system.

Based on what little information you've provided, one could assume that you haven't obtained a license of any sort, nor paid for any trunked repeater service, and the radios have whatever programming the previous user had. That would generally mean that it would not be legal, or advisable, for you to use them. I would specifically recommend that you avoid attempting to program them unless you know exactly what you're doing.
