• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued.     The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I recall about a decade ago, seeing a colleague with a slick unit in his chief's buggy, that allowed him to insert his portable radio in to a "charger unit" and transpose it into a mobile radio, complete with antenna connection and mobile mic.
I have been unable to find such a product in Motorola's online information.
Does anyone have any knowledge of such a unit (saves having BOTH a mobile and portable...sort of combines the portable into a mobile in-vehicle )

A currently manufactured portable radio would be the Motorola XTS which fits into a Motorola XTVA mobile unit which connects to the mobile antenna, uses a special microphone, has an external speaker, and charges the radio at the same time. You can look up these model numbers on Google to see what the units look like.

The device you asked about is known as a convertacom, It's generally comprised of a charging / data connector dock, a separate rf amplifier deck (depending on the model), and mobile speaker. I've seen somewhere that they do not have them for the apx series, but that they are available for (through) the xts series.
