• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Everyone please forgive me for my dumb question, I'm not familiar with Motorola radios at all. I'm just curious to know what radio this is, what software is needed, and what programming cable is needed. I've attempted to do some research on it but I just keep coming up with newer radios. Here's some pictures of the radio.

Judging by your second photo, you have an XTL5000. The other pic however doesn't match any XTL5000's I've ever seen.

The first picture is a W4 head and is perfectly compatible with the xtl. That said you will probably want the programming cable for the rear accessory port (made in both usb and serial) and astro25 mobile cps. The tag indicates its a VHF radio.

Looking at the flashcode, it's an analog only radio. Unless of course it's been upgraded along the way.

Googled it, and you, sir, have an astro spectra plus xtl5000. Note this particular radio isn't manufactured anymore but you might be able to find parts for it still.

I'm pretty sure an "astro spectra plus xtl5000" doesn't exist...but I could be wrong...

The flashcode or feature set your radio is capable of is analog only conventional operation. You can have the radio flashed to do p25 digital, adp, trunking etc. It costs but you can upgrade it. The head in first pic is a basic head. Some xtl radios have them most have the newer heads. So it's a good radio. Dash mount 45 watt. To change heads you'd need to find the newer 0 series head and update radio to accept the head, sync etc. Not a bad thing. I know of people who can do legit firmware updates over the net from there pc to yours. It's a solid method without sending it away. As for flash code options they can be costly depending on what you options you want and upgrades such as digital p25. You have a few options so it is a good radio. It is indeed a xtl5000 dash mount.

What part are you confused about?

"Still not an XTL"

"What you have is an XTL"

Wait, you are comparing the two not just talking about OPs radio I guess. OK I think I'm following now. I need some sleep.

Sorry, I guess I could have done that better. OP has an XTL5000 with a W4 control head. The link that was posted is an older Astro Spectra radio, not an XTL5000.

Ok so I'm pretty sure I already have the software, not looking to upgrade anything an I am aware that it is analog. Can someone point me in the right direction as far as what programming cable I need? I'd prefer usb if possible.

I'm familiar with all the connectors except for the red wire and the other small connector to the right of the usb, can you tell I'm a Kenwood person haha

Red wire is ignition sense (+12v), and the small white connector is your speaker output.

But for programming I would only need the usb and the big square connector correct?

Red wire is ignition sense (+12v), and the small white connector is your speaker output.
