The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Had read posts on RR about Saber knobs getting brittle and falling off.
Have experienced same here.

Bought 5 sets of control knobs for my Saber from the popular auction site.
For sure they came from old country.

Shipping was 3 days.

Had to use an X-Acto knife to scrape what looked like mold release compound out of knob grooves.
Otherwise, both knobs fit well.

Happy to have the old Saber back in operation.

That was me looking for Saber knobs. I needed up ordering some from brokenstolenradios.com from China. Should be here in 2-3 weeks I would figure. Ordered several sets for only like $5 a pair. I have some old Sabers I’d like to put to use with our local GMRS repeater club.

Something that I absolutely cannot find anywhere is the saber secure switch. I have one missing that. I have a member here looking into it for me but he hasn't gotten back to me yet.

The control knobs I got off auction site were $19.99 for 5 sets / free shipping.
3 days delivery.
Was a surprise how fast they got here.

Speaking of Saber parts, been trying to find a couple of NTN7061 dust covers for my Sabers.

Found a dealer online with NTN7061(A) in stock.
Part was only a few $, but shipping was something like $44 each.
They said it was fixed shipping.
No thanks.

Have 2 Astro VHF a MIII, a M1 and 2 Saber MI VHF.

Have newer /\/\ radios, but still like the Saber/Astro series.

One Saber I is 157-174mhz.
Those are useless to hams, but I use it to rx RR chatter in the 160-161mhz range.
RX much better than the scanner.
No scan of course, but RR uses mostly use 1 freq through here.
Battery lasts a lot longer than scanner too.

This is just 2 Astro Sabers that are currently sitting on my desk. I have several more in the radio cabinet as well. Love the old Saber / Astro Saber radios. Putting new life into them and they will go another 20 years easily.

Where on earth did you find a battery for the R model? (Sounds like we're talking about Mack trucks now.)

My Astro VHF III was also a "desk queen".
No dings and very few light scratches.
Not re-cased either as it still has the original Moto decals on back too.
Did send it off when I purchased, had the FW upgraded to latest version.

Nice radios. I have a saber IE and Saber II that need the SABER name plate on the top of the front. Anyone know where to find any?

I have bought the Chinese knobs for my IE, II and Astro Saber III and they do work. So far no issues. Fortunately the inserts were intact from the old knobs.

Nice !

There was a seller on eBay that was selling a few Motorola “R” batteries with brand new Lion cells in them for $150 a pop. While very pricey - I bought a bunch of them just to have for my “R” radios.

I have a looks to be never-fielded 800MHZ Astro Saber 3 that was manufactured around late 2001 so it was probably one of the last ones on the line ( I think they stopped production in early 2002 ? ). Been sitting in my radio storage bin for the last 4-5 years.

Back in the day I had an 8D-core Systems Saber 3 UHF that I could kick myself for selling. Only have 1 regular Saber ( a model 2 secure in UHF 440-470 ) left in my collection.

I had a super mint Astro Saber 2R on UHF that I sold to someone on Batlabs back in 2005ish that I would love to have back in my collection haha

Now there is a dedicated man with $$$.

Anybody who has a few spare NTN7061 dust covers, will be happy to talk to them.

I love my ASIII. It is one of the gems of my collection. My issue is I can't find a leather case for it with the extended battery anywhere!! I would love to have the matching leather for it, as I have leather cases for all my other radios, many of which have been on the fireground with me. While I wouldn't use the ASIII on the fireground anymore, having the leather would make it an equal in my collection.

The only thing keeping me from using my ASIIIs for daily use today is batteries. I just have been too lazy to investigate the current high capacity Lithium based battery and charger options for them.

So...since some of you may have done so, what's the best super capacity battery available, hopefully that works with the standard Saber drop-in charger?

I’ve been using an Impress charger ( same one that charges the Jedi / XTS batteries ). I have the super short Motorola Lion battery that still lasts 2-3 days on a charge ( doing mostly Monitoring ) - and I’ve been using a $27 Amazon battery that’s 2700MAH Ni-Mh made by “ExpertPower” that seems to work great ( although it’s the tall size ).

The Chinese lithium ion batteries are 5500 mAh and weigh in 6 oz lighter than the 1800 mAh NIMH. Plus they charge with a small 8.4V LiIon wall wart so you can pack light. still using my Systems Sabers. Great radios. Motorola designs went downhill after that line.

That Saber R you have is certainly pretty.

I have also been looking around at some Astro Saber knobs. The one I bought didn't come with any so I have to pull the knobs off my VHF one when I want to use the other one. Last time I checked for some, I was only able to source them from China, and looked to be made of very cheap plastic.

I am almost afraid to use my Sabers, because of the wonderful 01/82 error that will happen to all of them at some point. Which is a permeate brick from what I understand.

If that error code is inevitable, it doesn't seem to be related to how many hours of usage the radio has on it. So use it while it can be used. No sense saving up all your money for your funeral, so to speak!

Even then, the error is repairable, if you know someone who can replace a surface mounted memory chip.

The Astro Saber is very near and dear to me. While I never carried one myself I did buy one due to my exposure to it when I was younger and dumber. Way back when I met a cop in Florida who carried an AS, but what really threw me for a loop was the sound it made whenever he transmitted. It wasn’t a TPT, but to me at that time it was the sound of the future. Although now it is the sound of the 90’s. 20 years later of being a radio nerd I finally discovered the sound was MODAT. So I bought an AS and love it dearly, but the battery life on the “new” batteries I bought was around 1 hour at best. I will say compared to the APX the analog audio quality of the AS easily wins. Definitely has a full and rich sound.

The AS is rather confidence inspiring. When holding one there is a real presence and it feels like you could use it as a hammer if you needed to. As a last ditch item of defense it probably wouldn’t be a bad choice. Perhaps my first impression of the radio was the cool factor. Coming from the hills where my dad carried a big chunky gray GE radio and had a single rotating light on his dash compared to this Florida highway pursuit cop with his Astro Saber, Astro Spectra, MDT, and ^ shaped lights on the top of his car I was rather awe struck for an 8 year old.

Nostalgia.

Those pesky knobs. Mine obviously took a fall onto concrete at some point in its life, but the knob is still plenty functional. The encryption toggle does have a crack in it. I had been attempting to find one but considering the radio is a desk queen I don’t think it is in much danger.

Does look really cool with the high capacity battery. Mine is a model 2 VHF flavor so it has some stage presence among the other radios. I’d guess about 14” tall as a whole.

I wanted one when I became a medic ( a LONG time ago)

I was almost laughed at when I went to a moto dealer to inquire. Of course the price for even a (analog -of course, model 1, non-secure) was wildly out of my price range. I know that nostalgic feeling. Eventually I bought a few (used and NOS) over the years, both regular analog, Systems and Astro variants, sadly I no longer have any of them. So to me, the APX is the new Saber of
old, it has that very unique form-factor like the Saber.

I think I've got an OEM leather D-ring holster for an extended battery.
