Motorola Solutions Inc. said Monday it has signed a $22 million contract with local utility ComEd to provide a digital radio system covering 11,400 square miles in northern Illinois.

Schaumburg-based Motorola Solutions makes communications equipment and software for public safety and industrial customers.

Company executives have highlighted the transition from legacy analog systems to digital ones as a business opportunity. In the case of the ComEd contract, the utility will be the first in the U.S. to use a digital radio system based on a standard called Project 25 and operating in the 900 megahertz spectrum. Field workers will carry Motorola radios, which are designed for better audio quality and GPS location capabilities, among other features.

ComEd is owned by Chicago-based Exelon Corp. and has about 6.6 million customers, including 3.8 million people in northern Illinois.
