Ok, so I purchased a Motorola speaker that goes with the Spectra line of radios. They are 8 ohms. I have Spectra 8 ohm speakers attached to my scanners and they work well, indoors. So I saw this NOS Spectra speaker up for sale, and it said it is "louder" than the normal Spectra speaker with needing DC power for it. I purchased it. Now that I have it, I see that it is 3.2 ohms (Its model HSN6001C).

My question for you experts, and UPMAN if he reads this.... can I safely use this with my 15x or 996XT? I don't want to burn out the amp circuit in the scanner. I dont know if the scanner has a protection circuit or can handle the lower ohm ratings...

P.S. And please, don't reply with "plug it in and see what happens".

Thank you

I've been using the Motorola NSN6054A 15 watt amplified speakers which are also 3.2 ohm impedance. If you're looking for that Motorola spectra sound quality you will have to filter the audio a bit to get rid of the high frequency tinty tin can audio that the 15X/996XT Uniden scanners have. You can either run the audio thru an equalizer or make a home brewed audio filter with a capacitor and inductor. I find 220uF 16v cap across the the speaker output and 100uH inductor in series with the hot side placed as close to the external speaker output cleans the audio up nicely. The spectra will be louder of course because it had a more robust audio circuit but at low volume levels, with audio filtering the unidens can sound good too with a little help.
