To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Guys & Ladies,

Question I was talking to a few local/distant ham operators on a local repeater link frequency and they were asking what kind of audio does the XPR portable/mobile radios produce to make that great audio sound. They want me to email them back with helpful information about both radios. They ask what kind of radio I talked on I told them my Motorola Mototrbo XPR 6550 UHF 403/470mhz radio that does regular FM analog and digital Mototrbo. One guy replied with dang that radio sounds great! Can you guys and ladies tell what kind of audio technology these radios use?

Thank you for your time.

Even in analog, your audio is still being processed by the DSP. It's definitely a nice little benefit! The Motorola P25 radios do the same thing in analog as well.

Good deal. So to help out other hams using the same radio, what are your audio settings. Look in the CPS, & see if the AGC is enabled, or not. Also what is the mic gain settings in digital, & analog. These settings would be helpful to know for those of us who have the same radio, so we can also have great tx audio. GARY N4KVE

Just finished emailing all 6 of them and told them I had the AGC for analog and digital enabled for the best performance I also did a test with out the AGC enabled they told me setting 7 for analog sounds the best..I didn't get to use the digital setting cause their isn't one in my local area hopefully in the next 2 months there will be via what the guys told me at Florida Repeater Council only setback is big buildings and etc is what holding the people back who are interested in Mototrbo for Amateur Radio. I thought I had a good chance on talking on a Mototrbo linked system when I drove through in Lakeland but I guess the owner of the system switched from Mototrbo to NXDN.

Thanks. On my XPR mobile my AGC is set for off, & on analog the gain is 0. In digital I was told I was way too loud, & went from +4 to zero. Well I was told it's still way too loud, so I kept going lower, & I'm now at -10. Now people say my tx volume is the same as the others. But I'm using the RMN5065A touch tone mike which is known to have lots of gain. If all the users on our system would set the gain the same, & AGC the same, there would be no problem. GARY N4KVE

Gary,

I think some digital radio users like the loud type of audio sound then having a normal sound if that makes any sense. The audio sound for both analog and digital I like the sound where I can hear and understand the user who is talking to me with out asking the person to turn down the microphone settings or backing away from the microphone.

If you can for the guys and ladies that you talk to on Mototrbo that uses the XPR portable radios please ask them what kind of microphones they use and would they recommend them to another ham operator.

Echo issue with XPR6550's

I have multiple XPR6550''s in close proximity and am experiencing a terrible echo effect than my HT1250LS's did not have. How to I get into the menu to check/change the AGC mode or the different gain settings?

Make sure you are in "Expert" mode not "Basic" mode. You should see the AGC/Gain options under the "General Settings" and more Gain options for remote mics under the "Accessories" section. In the later firmwares (I think after 1.08) you also have a "Noise Suppressor" option that may help your echo problem with portables being used in close proximity to each other.
