If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I just picked this unit up to put into my patrol vehicle, I am looking for the cable to connect it all together. I have the power cables, I just need to know what cable is needed to mate them together and where I can get one. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you have a speaker and power cable for the control head as well? If you only need the remote mount cable:

  • HKN6170B control head data cable (10')
  • HKN6169B (17')

Yes I have the speaker and the power cables for both the head and the base portion. So it goes to the 10 pin connector on the base unit and the 9 pin on the head unit? I had ordered a HKN6168B so I’m guessing that is the wrong one

Forgive my ignorance but what does TIB stand for? Is there a way to convert it to the other configuration?

TIB=Transceiver Interconnect/Interface Board (I have heard it said both ways).

On your second pic you see those 2 wide connectors on either side of the round connector?

They are not designed to work with the control head you have.

This is what the brick should look like connector wise:

This is what is called an "O5" TIB head that will work with your O5 Control head when they are connected up with the cables someone earlier referenced.

Gotcha, so I should just say screw it and try to find the correct brick instead of messing with it then.

It depends on what band the radio is. If it’s just the TIB that you need, and it’s VHF or UHF, you should consider buying a 700/800 band brick with the correct TIB. ( as these are much much cheaper) The only issue you’re going to run into is making sure you program the radio for the O5 head BEFORE you do the hardware swap. You’ll need a rear accessory programming cable to do that.
