To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So here is my problem. My FD radio guy has tried twice to Program my Motorola XTS2500i AN model VHF radio and seccuessfully bricked it twice. I had it fixed both times. When I questioned him about what he was doing he stated that he simply hooked it up to the computer, with the OEM Motorola cable and read the code plug. The first time he tried cloning my radio from a BN model and that was the first time he bricked it. I got it fixed and there were some little tweaks that needed to be done to it, so he again hooked it up to the computer with the OEM Motorola cable, simply to read the code plug and change the MDC number. He said that after he read the radio, he changed the MDC, then sent the code plug back to the radio and it bricked again. Could someone tell me why this is possibly happening or is he just a goof? Thanks

First we nee to know your host/DSP and flashcode. If it's an FPP model, it has 240 personalities which takes a while to write, especially with a serial cable.

Be more specific when you say brick. What error code shows on the screen?

Reason I ask is it is not usually possible to use clone wizard to clone an BN 8 meg to a 4 meg AN radio. Is your radio a factory AN unit? I ask this because there are quite a few AN radios that some "hero" shoved in BN 8 meg codeplugs using depot tool that do things like you describe.

Yes the radio is a factory AN, but it does have FPP, so I'm thinking it's not to original OEM specs. But I'm pretty sure it locked up because the guy tried to force the BN into it. My next question is if he read my AN changed a few things, then rewrote to the radio, why would it there the same error?

So what would happen if he tried to send a BN to an AN radio? Would it just give an error and not proceed or would it throw the FAIL 01/82 error?

The problem is the "hero" with his/her depot software can do thing that should not be done. An 8 meg radio has a different firmware (HOST) and (DSP) and a different codeplug structure. So yes, slamming in a codeplug for a completely different radio using depot can hose a radio up.
