If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So, I had a pretty cool idea last week, that was to buy a brand new XTS2500 and use it as a scanner. I later found out that I did not have all of the information I needed prior to programming, I needed know the talkgroup ID's for the system I want to monitor. I heard something from a colleague that I could use "16" for all-call, but I need that as a six digit number for it to be accepted into CPS.

Does anyone know a way to program an XTS2500 as a scanner with that limited information that I have on my system????

I have freq information and hex information, but that's it. Does anyone know what my friend was referring to when he said "16 for all-call?"

xts2500 for a scanner

boy did you open a can of trouble with that question i'm sure your going to get more than you asked for trying to monitor a p25 trunking system so be ready.
just buy a scanner and then you wont get into trouble or do jail time or pay a big fine or BOTH.

Here is an idea.. research whats involved before buying a radio that you will most likely end up getting inhibited anyway

Is it really that big of a deal using a transceiver as receive only on one of these systems?

(my knowledge of a P25 system is limited, my original assumption is that it would be as simple as programming a few freqs in and clicking a few checkboxes, similar to just programming an HT on a conventional system.. boy was I wrong.)

So I guess my next questions is, is it possible to program this thing to listen to a P25 system without affiliating or anything? To make it act as just a dumb scanner?

Sigh... after reading a few other threads, this topic looks to be a bit redundant and bleak. Looks like the new XTS is going to be a nice paperweight..

thanks for your (brief) help, guys.

Well, I'm sure that there are plenty of people that would trade him even up a brand new 996XT for it! Providing it is a K split and a good flash code, hi hi! Oh, and make sure that you send the programming software for it as well...LOL

you did the right thing by getting a scanner. xts radios are the devil. lol i have been programming radios for trunking systems for years its not easy and it can get inhibited. theres where you will need the cps to fix it. so buy a psr800 and be happy

Did the OP state if the talkgroups were conventional or trunked?
There is an all call TGID, 65535, that will Rx / Tx in all talkgroups using the same frequency and NAC on a P25 conventional system.

I do however agree with above posts......if you want to monitor any trunked system, get a scanner.
