If not programmed properly, that type of HT can cause a lot of trouble. There are many threads in RR about using a HT as a scanner, and most suggest it is not a good idea. They do have advantages in sound quality, but can be a real problem if transmit inhibit is not enabled. Do a little searching and you will learn why.

The OP said NOTHING about programming....rather is anyone looking.
Pallen444 , unfortunately there are members on these forums that would rather treat you like a child than to try and help you learn something....ego trips abound.
As far as Motorola questions go, get ahold of Mark at the Radio Shack in Derby, he is more than willing (unlike some on here) to help you with questions and programming. That is where I got mine from.

If Uniden and Whistler made scanners that could and would receive as well as what the Motorolas do as far as multi path simulcast then I would have went that route and the rest of what I say would be a moot point...they cant and don't show any signs of being able to in the future so I went with Motorola.

The way I see it is, if programmed correctly , there is no affiliation, none what so ever....I check for any signs of affiliation every time before and after a CPS session, even if the radio, its self, is NOT connected to the computer. If for some reason I brick the radio, than its on me. This idea that keeps getting bantered around about interfering is plausible, given that it was done with malicious intent or with a complete and total lack of care when programming.....is there a learning curve, you bet, instead of a curve it is more or less a straight wall.

Where to begin...

1. Most people haven't obtained the programming software legally, which makes it's borderline to discuss here. Where did you get yours?
2. Even if you obtain the SW legally (assuming it isn't depot, which is another matter) you still need a system key and no matter how you obtain it I'm pretty sure that you are "modifying the SW" when you program using it, which is against the EULA you agreed to.
3. You specifically were asking questions that someone that knew what they were doing wouldn't ask.
4. You really can put authorized users lives in jeopardy if you don't know what you are doing. This is not a scare tactic or just a myth, it REALLY can happen.

Why don't you post your codeplug so we can be sure it wasn't done "with a complete and total lack of care when programming"?

I'm not trying to single you out, but you are being vocal about attitudes here. No "ego trip" here, I touch a lot of trunked systems and have had to track down "missed calls" that ended up being the result of a cloned radio ID.

Hate to say walking into this page with an attitude is going to get what you give.. There are system admins and techs here and they know others its a SMALL world ... Someone see a rogue radio showing up or interfering in the system where you live and your call plastered right up in the corner don't be surprised if you get a visit. Hit or miss is not the way to try your hand at programming

I posted part of this in another thread.

I took the time to do some research and saved up my monies to buy a Unication G4. For over 90 days it has worked great. I decided not to go the "cheap" route of 3000 or 5000 radios because even with my knowledge, I did not want to cause any problems on the systems. Systems are unique and when/if someone gets hurt because of system issues, I don't want to be the one who caused it. Whether accidental or intentional, it would not matter. I try to play by the rules and encourage others to not take short cuts.

With that being said, I understand we have people who are able to program these radios and do it right. Again, I went the more expensive route and also have found that it was very easy to program the Unication G4. I have reprogrammed it to different talk groups on Shawnee County and added some of the KSICS in there over the last couple weeks as well.

I don't have to worry about any interference and to me it is comforting to know that I can listen seamlessly without any chance of impacting life safety of others. I do carry three radios with me that are on several different systems. I do have system keys and access to system keys however I leave it to professionals who play with it everyday instead of people like me who play with it less than once a month.

I have heard thru other ComL's in Kansas and Oklahoma that have been working the Fire Season this year of radio interference issues. In a couple of the scenes there has been some interference because of people causing radio ID issues by programming radios (like those that were being sold on ebay and them programmed to solve the simulacast path issues) to listen in.

There was a couple discussions this appears to lean towards the FCC looking at folks who are in violation of the Communications Act:

SEC. 333. [47 U.C.S. 333] WILLFUL OR MALICIOUS INTERFERENCE.
No person shall willfully or maliciously interfere with or cause interference to any radio communications of any station licensed or authorized by or under this Act or operated by the United States Government.

As discussed elsewhere, if you are not authorized to program an ID in the radio you are likely committing a felony as well as a negative public safety impact.

....Define "cheap" I paid North of 400 (closer to 500) for my XTS 5000 as I recall w/ a new battery, antenna and belt clip and programming included in the price. If the new Uniden SDS 100 that is being bandied about performs as good or better than my Motorola XTS as far as multi site issues, I'll buy it too.
According to the know it all's that I had to deal with earlier on these forums reference my ownership of one of those menacing Motorola XTS 5000 radios, all dispatch has to do is push a button and the radio becomes a brick, so we all where lead to believe. So which story are we to believe in now? The FCC attempting to track down some rouge radio, whether it be in the hands of some wacker or in the hands of a competent public service employee or vol. or the brick button on a dispatch consul since this post is in reference to a Motorola radio.
SO if indeed this was/is an issue , could this have been a volunteer or even paid fire fighter attempting to use the incorrect talk group/ch./freq. since no other information has been provided as to what type of system is in question here....not pointing a finger of blame but it does happen...
