A quick glance of the FCC grants for Madison County shows Huntsville Shores, LLC licensed for 452.3375 and 451.8625. That company seems to be affiliated the Bridge Street shopping area. The emission designator is 7K60FXE and FXD which the radioreference wiki indicates is MOTOTRBO. There may already be other businesses in the area using MOTOTRBO that I'm not aware of.

Are these systems going to proliferate? What is the selling point to the businesses buying them?

Yes. I'm sure we're going to be seeing a lot more use of MOTOTRBO, as well as NXDN , in the future. Part 90 licensees have to migrate to 12.5 Khz bandwidth by 2013, and when folks are replacing their radios or buying new radios, they have the option of going MOTOTBRO or NXDN.

What is the selling point to the businesses buying them?

They cost less then a P-25 handheld. I haven't seen anything about "folks can't pick it up on a scanner" but its true, since scanners don't demodulate NXDN or MOTOTRBO. However, you can buy the same type radio and listen in.
