Hey All: This is my first post & I'm a newbie to scanners so please be gentle! You will easily go over my head! But I learn fast....

I want to mount my RS PRO97 to My Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide (bagger) (geezer glide). Searched the Forum archives.....some good info but unfamiliar with antenna lingo / models...and some web links no longer active.

Live in the Northwest.....hilly....but travel to South Dakota annualy......a good all purpose antenna? A premade mount bracket?? I Have good machining skills & tools. 1/4 wave? 1/2 wave? which is better?...the stock one just as good? Help.....suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Not to be too negative, or rag on Harleys, but I think the vibrations would kill the scanner pretty quickly. I had an old Uniden BC-350A mounted on a much smoother 4 cylinder BMW bike and the vibes killed it after less than a year.

I sound like an ad sometimes, but ram mounts are somewhat shock isolated as far as mounting the unit itself. They have all sorts of mounts for cycles.

I have my Garmin GPS and Sirius receiver mounted on my bike (Honda sport tourer).

I've put a scanner in a tankbag and run it into my Autocom. Do you have a reliable way of getting the audio into a helmet? I don't think most of the speakers inside even a mobile scanner will be powerful enough to hear at any speed (except stopped).

I will definitely agree that the RAM mounts are the easiest because they're so modular, and there's so many variants of the mounts. Touratech makes different mounts, but I dunno' if they make Harley mounts.

I would think you would be doing well to even be able to hear a scanner that's on a motorcycle!

Let me guess: headphones or earphone?

Ummmmm

And what about hearing whats around you?
Btween the Harley and the scanner...
I can be in a quiet room and the scanner alone can be VERY attention grabbing..
NOt so much because of the scanner but because of the content is: shootings, stabbings ya know PD stuf...
Of course Motorcycle Cops have all their radio equipment but their bike aren't as loud as a typical civilian's Harley.
And they have A LOT of training of how to perform a million things at once ,SAFELY.

I don't know just my thoughts and experiences.

Crista

Ok. Here are a few answers. Audio from scanner plugs directly into stock stereo. Stock stereo is speed compensated (louder the faster you go) I listen to CB anyway so scanner is not much different. Vibration? maybe....engine is rubber mount....no noticable vibration at mount (handlebar) Heck.....drop it in a jacket pocket! Got the power / audio figured out...just looking for clever mount & best antenna / mount.

MOST of my riding is long distance / rural. I really don't need local police channels. State Patrol monitoring good for speed traps / BIG accidents involving road closures.
