How exactly would I go about mounting a 10ft mast onto the roof? I am just looking for some instructions (and maybe some advice as well). I was thinking of geting a discone and putting that on the mast until I can afford to add a directional antenna.

aristotle73, there are several ways to mount an antenna on a roof. You can get small towers in 3, 5 and 10 foot sizes, you can get mounts to connect to various vents on the roof, and you can get something that doesn't require any holes to be drilled and will carry a good sized antenna such as pictured in this site:

That one is for a flat roof but they also make that same mount with a hinged center part so you can put it up on the peak of the roof. They are held down with cinder blocks and will not move under the wind load of a scanner antenna.

First of all you dont want to put nails in your roof. Jusk asking for trouble. I would think most people like myself mount 10' mast from 1' underground to facia board at roof edge. Bolt with bracket. Add another 10' above that. That gives you an antenna about level with roof top on standart ranch style house. Also easy to get down if needed.
