hey everyone.

i have a super old RS PRO-63, and i'm moving to sacramento (rocklin actually) later this month, and i want to be able to pick up the trunked frequencies (esp. sac police).

i know this is a little off topic but, what scanner would suit the region the best with a college student's budget?

i'm new to the newer bit of the scanning world (pc controlled scanners, pc programmable scanners etc) but i grew up scanning with my little realistic crystal scanner that my dad got at a garage sale. so your help with programming and such is much appreciated!

thanks for your help.

Looks like most of the systems up there are still analog. But I am looking at the data just in the database here. I am not from Sac and I am not sure if they have any digitial systems up there. If you find that they are all still analog or the ones you want to listen to anyway, check out the 246t for around $200-220. Great analog trunking scanner. If you get reports of a lot of digital then you will probably want to save up for that 396T.

Thanks

While the Sac Regional TRS is currently analog, they are gearing up for a major system rebuild to start in the next year. I haven't heard yet anything about whether it will be full digital or hybrid analog/digital. Either way, expect to need a digital capable scanner in the future.

So far, the Sacramento area is either analog trunked or conventional. As stated, there's talk of Scaramento going digital at some time in the future but the proposed dates almost always slip. Any of the Uniden scanners would be fine for now. If you can still find a Radio Shack Pro-95 for about $150 or the Pro 97 for $220, either would suit your needs for now. If you budget can stand it, the Pro 96/Pro2096 digital scanners are on sale at Radio Shack for $450, $50 off the regular price.

You may not be able to get Sac PD from Rocklin, depending on antenna, of course, but you'll get Sac Sheriff and Roseville PD/FD (both analog TRS), and Placer County SO, Rocklin PD/FD, Auburn PD/FD, Lincoln PD/FD and similar local stuff is conventional.

Are you going to Sierra College? If so, try: 151.655, 151.895, 154.57, 151.625, 154.6. These are Sierra College Police and Maintenence and Operations.

Welcome to the neighborhood.

I would buy a 246T, that's pretty cheap for what it can do and all the memories it can hold.

yes i am, and thanks!

can anyone confirm whether Sac City PD's signal reaches rocklin (sierra college) or not?

thanks for all your help

Probably not if you're just using the antenna that comes with the scanner. It's a little too far (most likely).

Sac PD reception in Rocklin

If your at Sierra College dorms, I'd say no reception of Sac PD (CityTRS).. the Dorms are in a hole elevation wise, but if your just a bit further west, then yes, I've received Sac PD / West Sac PD/Fire on Taylor Road in the Albertsons & K-Mart parking lot, It was weaker in the Safeway lot by I 80 but readable, (Pro95 nd or bc235 with 800mhz duckie). If your west on top of the hill Stanford ranch area then yes you can get the city TRS no problem, or south on top of the hill (Sierra College blvd) then yes also (because you can see the buildings down town..so you have good line of site). As far as systems in the area Davis city is Analog and Digital, and Sac county, Sac City, Roseville, Folsom and Davis do a drill ocassionally interconnect their systems all on the same talk group, so sooner or later they will all go P25 digital, for more channel capacity, just like the tv transmissiona must go all digital so they can squeeze in to a smaller bandwidth the same or more content.

Make sure whatever scanner you pick up it will reband when they move the Pub safety band further from the cell spectrum...

One thing you will notice there in Roseville / Rocklin area is that the high voltage power lines radiate some cellular interference in the proximity of the antenna towers when they are used by cell providers... Roseville has a lot of those... and the interference travels a greater distance along the high voltage wires.

So inclosing yes Sac pd is able to be received n Rocklin.. depending on your location
