I was listening today, and a State Trooper (?) called into dispatch and requested to know where they showed her position 'cause she was working on her AVL. Do all of our troops have Vehicle Locators? How does this system work? Is it possible to see what dispatch sees (a screen with the positions of the troopers on it? COME ON - HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE!)? Anyone know what freq they Tx their positions on? I know the GPS satellites Tx their time signals in the 1200 and 1500 mHz ranges ... I assume the individual cars must have a GPS receiver in them and then Tx their position back to dispatch somehow ... somewhere in the 800 mHz range?

Very few MSP cars have AVL and it is usually based on the counties they cover. If they cover a county that uses AVL, such as Clinton or Shiawassee, then the MSP cars will have AVL to assist the county dispatchers. The frequencies they use to transmit their position should be county based and probably not MPSCS related.

Over 10 years ago all the metro detroit MSP Cars had AVL. Metrocell sponsored it, and at most tech conventions, they'd have a demo (not real time, but real footage of activity, just delayed)
Not sure what they do now tho.

The Lady Trooper I heard talking about was just south and east of Cadillac at the time.

Now that I think about it, though, I just assumed she was a trooper ... could've been a Fife for all I know.

Where I am the gps wired to the MDC. When the location stuff is up and running it will use cell towers, just as the MDC and CAD are.

If it was around the Cadillac area it may have been a Conservation Officer. I believe that all their trucks are equipped an avl. The DNR also uses it in some of their fire equipment, usually the dozers.

I know that most of Livingston County, State, County and Local police and now some EMS anf Fire units are running GPS AVL and sending it back to central dispach.

I think it uses cellular along with the Mobile Data Terminals, but I'm not sure.
