Typically troopers have a portable capable of using the local trunked system (whether it's an MSP legacy 800 portable, county portable, or FIRST portable) plus at least a 39mhz mobile... and possibly a 7/800 mobile as well if provided by the county or ESD.

There's a lot of variation in this theme, but having worked around them quite a bit and taken a good few glances in their cars that appears to be about standard.

Stand by for a long PM about patching, which will hopefully fill in the gaps.

Thinking about Worcester County current system, a Berlin Barracks trooper *used* to have a county portable to operate on the WC/OC EDACS system Barracks V TG (and other TGs as required.) Since Berlin is now on FiRST, they have probably ditched the county portable (and maybe an installed county mobile?) in favor of a FiRST portable and mobile, and rely on some type of patch to interoperate with the county, rather than coming up directly on a county channel / TG. Am I thinking about this scenario correctly?

Yes. They're on FIRST equipment, and patches are in place for MSP, WCSO, and OCPD talkgroups between FIRST and EDACS- the audio is pretty crud on them, but it works.

Now I understand why the audio is crud.... Seems that when WC/OC upgrade their system to P25 the audio has the potential to improve...?

Yes, very.

The crud sound, as far as I can gather, appears to be a product of analog noise not getting hit properly with noise reduction as it goes to the digital side, and the weird canned sound of the TDMA digital audio not translating clearly when it gets retransmitted as analog audio.
