The commander of the Niles Michigan post lives around the corner from me.

The license plate on his personal vehicle used to say 5301MSP, but I noticed the other day that it now says 5101MSP. They are apparently renumbering posts too.

So does this mean Troopers are going to be assigned marked 'take-home' vehicles & other gear (handheld radios + chargers, etc.) so they can go in & out of service from their own driveways, or is this plan going to raise employees & MSP fuel expenses, with personnel having to make longer commutes to simply get to/from work & pick up a patrol vehicle?

This is stupid, especially for us northerners that rely on the MSP for a lot more than just highway patrol. Up this way the MSP work very closely with local departments, and in my area (Traverse City) the MSP are even dispatched and take calls from our dispatch center, and work very closely with the Sheriff's departments and city police, in both Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties. Now the nearest post will be 45 minutes away, well over an hour if you're in Leelanau county. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Actually you are referring to Lt. Mike Brown who was the Post 53 commander but was transferred to the Paw Paw Post. Thats probably why he changed his license plate. That would be his new radio designator.

IMO.... dont know WHY you would want to do that but I see it quite often..... Officers/Troopers/Deputies using their dept. intials and their designator/badge # as a personalized plate on their personal vehicle..... just asking for someone to mess with it IMO......

Down here the MSP cruisers are usually out on patrol. If the cars in Traverse are just sitting in the lots waiting to be called, then maybe it's a good thing as this will force them onto the road.

I think it's a good idea. Not sure if it's really practical though - as in a money saver. Yeah, sure they might be able to get out of their lease at the new Richmond Post, which probably runs a heck of a lot more than the 1930's built Post up here in Sandusky, but geesh! You'd think they woulda kept that one opened, and close ours down.

I know our Post only runs about 2 or 3 units a day, on average. So they're not that noticable, if ya know what I mean, in my County. They more than less, pick-up the salck from the Sheriffs Dept, if they are either in the area, or the Sheriffs Dept is busy somewhere else.

But who knows/ Maybe those bean-counters in Lansing - "MAY", have a good idea after all, eh?

It will be interesting to see how this will work out. I know the troops have a lot of questions about it. Most all of us support it, especially if it means there will be no lay-off of troopers and no loss of public services. I do have to be honest in saying that I'm a bit concerned that the MSP with lose some "presence" in some communities. While it may not seem like it, posts still have alot of foot and phone traffic during the days and afternoons that they are open.

I have read somewhere else on the net (9&10's site) that there is concern that Cadillac is where the post will be for NW Michigan, instead of TC. Now while I'm just a worker bee (a road troop) I imagine of the reasons for this are the buildings themselves.

The TC Post is over 80 years old and rather small. The building that the Cadillac Post uses on the other hand is large and I'd guess it to be less then 25 years old. The Cadillac Post moved there in 1999 from the old WPA built building down the street. The Cadillac Post also has a huge garage with the room to support and store a lot more to equipment that the MSP needs, like Dive Team boats, ES Team trucks, etc. Granted some place more geographically centralized like Buckley might be better, but getting a building in the TC area like the one in Cadillac would be very costly.

Don't most of the gov't-owned but otherwise unmarked cars used as take-home vehicles for the bigwigs still have the ###MSP & ###MSG plates these days?

Yes the #24 Richmond is CLOSING. The city actually owns the building and property and MSP had a 20 year lease until 2015 @ $207,000 a year according to a article.

My understanding from the troops I know and interact with at my one job is that some that live in St. Clair County will have take home car with equipment and will check in and out of service from their home (Like the DNRE and Sanilac County SO does).

The rest will get split between the #21 Oak Park Metro North (Will only conduct Freeway Patrols in Wayne/Oakland/Macomb County) and the rest out of the #38 in Lapeer.

Makes no sense becuase the Richmond Post is much much larger then the Lapeer Post in size. They would have more room for cars, records, equipment, storage, evidence etc etc... Lapeer is ok for the county but to add a county that has 3-4 Times the residents and call volume of Lapeer may over fill the post there.

God only knows what will happen to all the guys out of the #29 in Detroit because they are centrally located in a great spot on the 2nd between the Blvd and Baltimore in Detroit. If anything make that the 2nd District HQ then. It's in the State Building so it's not like they are renting that space since the state of Michigan owns it already outright. The only thing they are doing is renting vehicle space in the Parking Garage from the Farbman Group LLC who also owns New Center One and the Fisher.

Hmmm, when you're gone for close to 15 years, you end up wondering things like 'Where did Northville go?'

Does MSP assign take-home vehicles or do they run as shifts and have to come to Post for briefings and vehicle assignments?
