Nothing to it... Fill out the ap, mail it in, get a permit in 2-4 weeks.

I'm still waiting for mine to come back. It's been about 2 weeks now. They're supposed to be good for 3 years.

Lifetime. In the past you had to renew but that requirement was dropped (probably due to common sense.)

Just remember that by signing the application, you have promised to not use the scanner to commit or aid in the commission of a crime and to not answer or chase police calls you may hear on your scanner.
This isn't directed towards anyone specifically, just at anyone that may not be aware. If too many people break these rules, it'll end up ruining it for all of us.

Why not HAM it up instead/in addition?
Could always consider getting your HAM radio license. It's good for 10 years and equal in permitting use of a scanner in a vehicle. Plus it's not a bad idea to be able to communicate with other HAMs in the event of a disaster, even if you use it for nothing else. During the last blackout HAMs were on the air like crazy, helping out hospitals and everything else.
Additionally I've noticed several (if not most) states have a clause allowing for a scanner in a vehicle if you have a HAM license. Whereas the Michigan permit is only good in Michigan. I have both, got the Michigan permit probably 9-10 years ago. Most people that are smart enough to operate a scanner (especially the new ones where you have to understand trunking etc..) should have no problem passing the Technician level test.
As a side note and just a matter of opinion, I would think a police officer would look less "suspiciously" on someone with a scanner in the car, who had a HAM radio license than they would someone who had ONLY a scanner license. Granted they both allow for what we're doing, but the mood/assumptions/opinion the police officer has of you during a traffic stop can have a HUGE outcome on the result.

Well, it took about 5 weeks to get it, but I finally have my permit.
The Hobbiest reason still works well.

Does anybody have any idea as to how often these applications are rejected for out of state residents?
Don't know of anyone that has gotten rejected. They do run a criminal background check, though, so possibly rejections are along these lines.

That is what I am wondering? Indiana has a much stricter law that unless you have a permit (ham license excludes you) you can't have a scanner in your car or on your person. Likewise, they are very, very reluctant to give you one to a person outside of the state of Indiana.

For the past couple years my family has been going back for part of the summer with my grandma who owns property there. (My uncle goes up for the second month and then they come back to CA, not that it's relevant.) It isn't as though the permit would never be needed. If I were rejected though, it might give me the extra incentive to get my ham license.

Every time I crossed the border with a scanner in my car I would be breaking Michigan law , if I did not have the permit .
That alone is enought reason .
This is not to mention the car racing , boat racing , air shows and yes the police ,fire and ambulance that I monitor while I am in the state .
After all this is a hobby for most people and not a criminal experence .
What about a ham operator with criminal convictions ?? Should he be allowed a scanner in a car ??
Bottom line ---- it is the law and anyone visiting the state would have to have a permit to be LEGAL.
I for one am just glad they don't charge for it .
