It is since most MSP units start with the letter of their respective barracks. A little more info like frequency and area heard would be helpful.

If the barrack designator had been used in conjunction with the unit number I wouldn't need to post the question.

Waterloo (that's Barracks A, 39.42) was talking to two 70x units, no other designators.

give us a clue as to the 70x series activities, and we could probably help.

My best guess is they are civilian crime scene techs or civ. commercial vehicle inspectors...something like that.

The MSP Special Operations Division, which includes STATE (MSP's SWAT team) and the motorcycle unit, among others, is based out of Waterloo Barrack, so that is another possibility.

I've heard some strange stuff on the MSP channels. You really need a good lowband antenna to hear the mobiles. Even a horizontal wire 1/2 wave dipole will do, a discone won't. I leave 4 scanners parked just for MSP, most of the time it's routine traffic stops but every so often it gets good. Also search the vhf federal bands for joint operations. I really enjoy listening to the whistle blowers following the 10-55 with the emergency flasher's on.

Just caught the end of a dispatcher clearing out with 2 of those units, so there's no point of reference.
The vehicle inspectors units use a prefix (can't remember what).

CS techs, interesting possibility. Any big crimes in Howard cnty yesterday morning?

Again, on what frequency?? It sounds like you're listening to Waterloo barracks, but it's hard to infer from what little detail is here.

Fourwd,

Seems like the responses are everything but what you are looking for. Motorcycles used to have a 700 series designation (typically 730-740)...but now they seem to use "Motor-xx" on air. Unsure about current status. Cars 0-99 are Captains and higher, with Car-1 obviously the Superintendant. 100-199 used to be narcotics...still the case??? 300 series was electronic services, I think. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (formerly ASED) is known as "CV-xx" on air. We have quite a few other numbers to fill in.

You are right, the freq/barrack is a moot point, as the numbered series cars are deployed statewide - shared by all counties.

700 series

I'm guessing here, but the Highway Response vehicles carry "700" IDs, and are often heard on 39.400 here in Frederick County. The one I've heard is 4 digit, (Pronounced by our dispatcher here as 'Seven thousand fifty'), but not sure how the others call theirs. Never heard any other 700 ID's out this way. (Highway Response vehicles fall under State Highway Admin, SHA, and are the big yeller trucks with all the strobe lights, markers, etc, that are used to direct traffic and clean up the mess on the major highways, for those not familiar with Md).

Best Regards,

Jason

First off, the MSP Automative Safety Enforcement Division is now the Automotive Safety Enforcement Section... not CVED. Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Divison is now Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section. They are still both Sections within the state police.

I do not believe they still use any special designators for vice/narcotics. To my knowledge most narcotics investigators are assigned to a barrack now, and use a barrack designator. For example here in Worcester County, there are several narcotics troopers assigned to the Worcester County Buerua of Investigation. They are all assigned a V-4X number (our normal trooper cars end at V32, so investigators in other counties probably use much higher numbers), but generally here they use their CBI designator when they actually use the radio, which is not very often. I will not go into their numbers names etc, cause there could be a confidentiallity issue there.

I don't know that there is anymore special alotments for the car numbers that are assigned to HQ. Most cars without a barrack designator or CV number, use a regular number, up to 3 digits. I do know that at one time, a friend who is a Trooper on the crash team, was operating vehicle 714. But another trooper whom I am familiar with was operating another 7XX car, but was not on the crash team.

I know my spelling is a little screwy, and my info may be incorrect. But understand this. The MD State Police goes through many changes in short periods of time. For example over a years time the "Crash Team" was disbanded, then a month or so later rebanded but each trooper was assigned to a barrack and under the barracks command, but only did serious accident investigation. Then a few weeks/months later, they were re-assigned to the CVED (Was still CVED at the time but now known as CVES). Then even later they were broken off as a seperate unit under the command of the SOB. So God only knows what the 7XX series really means, and what ever it means today will probably change in a few weeks :)
