Mt Juliet PD going digital

This mornings Tennessean states that Mt Juliet PD will be going to the digital 800 MHz system so they can talk with Nashville PD. It also says they will keep the old system as well so they can communicate with other non-800MHz jurisdictions. It should be interesting here soon.

Sounds like they will be maintaining two seperate radio systems. I know a few police departments here who do that, but many others have eventually phased out the old system because of maintenance costs. However, from a scanning viewpoint this will make monitoring them very interesting and will mean those who do not have digital scanners will have to get one soon.

A few weeks ago I was searching through the 800mhz band and thought I heard Mt Juliet, but I couldn't find it again so I just assumed it was the Airport Police.

Today I was monitoring the Mid Tennessee 3rd Mobile System and clearly identified Mt Juliet Police on that system. I tuned by other scanner and monitored 155.820 and it was a simulcast.

I didn't have my scanner set to a motorola type I system, so I don't know the talkgroup id. It was coming up consistently as 45120 on the default setting (type II, I guess).

Anybody know what's going on?

San Diego Sheriff Department had their 800mhz Digital simulcast on 450mhz for the first year of operation. Then one day, the simulcast was gone, and now you must have a digital scanner to pickup most Police Depts. in San Diego, excluding City PD.

I guess I didn't make clear that the oddity here is that the system I heard them on was busy private business trunked system.

Maybe they are testing radios before putting up towers, but I thought they were just buying radios that will work on the neighboring Nashville system and keeping their VHF system.

Simpson County, MS for a few years operated on a local LTR SMR, then bought thier own LTR system for the county's law enforcement. So this is not as uncommon as it seems, there have been several municipalities that have used SMR's to get into trunking.

Here is some info on MJPD 800. The PD is working to improve its interoperability with its neighbors. There has been some limited testing of differing devices and equipment. To this point I don't think anything has been officially decided or set up. What you probably heard was a simulcast over a demo set of radios to demonstrate various features. Since there is not any 800 system online in Mt. Juliet yet they are probably piggybacking on other systems and perhaps even checking coverage in various areas of the city. I know they have looked at both digital and analog systems. They also already have some radios on metro's system but they don't do any of their primary dispatch on there. All primary dispatch is still on the vhf repeater system.

On further note, this trend is picking up speed across the middle tn area. Many organizations not just law enforcement are moving into 800 service and leaving VHF and UHF systems. I am surprised the no new subscription systems have come online. I think people are learning how hand nextel is as well.

MJPD Digital Upgrade

Looks like equipment is starting to arrive according to a recent post from the Mt. Juliet Police Department. Does anyone have any further word on what type of system is going to be implemented? Obviously it is Motorola equipment and it would be our guess it's going to be on the 800mhz range with trunking. We just wanted to resurface the original thread in hopes of learning more.

Those portable radios (the one on the right anyway)look like Motorola APX7000, dual band, capable of running 700/800 mhz and vhf. So looks like they are going to to be using both the old vhf and implementing the 700/800 all in one radio.

@dave At one point there was mention of them maintaining both present and new systems but didn't seem as feasible. Also there had been discussion about just piggy-backing off Metro Nashville's system by adding additional repeaters. Not sure where all of that stands at this point, but thanks for the input on the Motorola's. Seems sure they'll use those to access both UHF/VHF.

They have been using that system for quite awhile 2-3 years

They will be piggy-backing off Metro Nashville, using the APX radios, and patching on VHF through a dispatcher to communicate with other agencies using analog. Looks like the site address is at York road, where three towers reside. Two cell towers, and the Middle Tennessee Electric 800 TDMA site. I'd speculate that they needed a clear line of sight to the Andrew Jackson site, and used the hill at the dead-end of York Road to accomplish this.

Does anyone know if the MJPD feed provider has the capability to stream the P25 audio? If not, I may be able to sacrifice a scanner to do it. I'm having a problem with my Nashville Fire scanner at the moment, so may not be able to.

Updated Database

Thanks to KD4YGG for updating the database to include the York road site frequencies. This is definitely where the transmission is going to occur and should have a range of 15 to 30 miles. Talk groups have not been posted yet but we will monitor new frequencies in hopes to gain additional information. It's confirmed there are five main frequencies with ten additional frequencies, for a total of 15, which are set up for nationwide interoperability calling. As noted in the database, the new system operates under the P25 Phase I FDMA communication standards in a 12.5 kHz mode. It uses a Continuous 4 level FM modulation which yields the 9600 baud rate. The FCC just granted the municipality's license this past Friday on July 20th.

Shouldn't Mt. Juliet be listed in the Metro System, rather than it showing that it's their own system?

On a side note, their car mobiles are the APX6500. Very nice equipment.

Correct us if wrong but is the RR Database not setup by geographic areas? Meaning that even if it did fall under the same system it would appear also under Mt. Juliet. Upon further review though, it seems it's a separate system (with maybe the possibility of being interconnected) and has its own FCC call sign (WQPQ635).

They're using a Motorola GTR 8000 Base Radio.
