Hello,

I have a Uniden BC72XLT, (Nothing crazy considering Im new to the topic) and I have a few of the MTA police frequencies programmed in, as my scanner cant reach the 800MHz range for county wide police.

I sometimes hear audio from the units trying to contact the Headquarters, however I hear only the units side of the conversation. I cant hear the Headquarters side.

Any ideas guys? I did some research on the topic however I noticed the units I do hear trying to contact the dispatch are on the dispatch frequency. So I dont understand why I cant hear the dispatch side of the conversation. Can there be a chance the dispatch side is transmitting digital? Because if it is thats the reason I cant pick that side of the conversation up.

Note: I am in Suffolk County, Long Island.

They transmit on one channel and receive on another. You need both the "base" and "mobile" freqs to receive the conversation..

Put these 3 freqs in and make sure when you are listening that you are in scan mode. If you hold either channel, you will only hear one side..

Mta Police
160.4550 Operations Base 114.8 pl
160.4550 Operations Moble 151.4 pl
160.6050 Car to Car 151.4 pl

From your list there it looks like base and mobile operate on the same freq and just use separate PL's.

And to the OP no you don't need to program in the PL.

Im just wondering because I thought it was working with the new freqs I programmed because I herd one transmission then another right after however I now realize it didnt work because the transmissions were on the same freqs.

Any other suggestions? Im still confused.

Just wondering - Those "PL" things - Do I have to program them?

The BC72XLT does not have PL capability. It's not necessary anyway, just program in the two frequencies, 160.455 and 160.605, and you'll be fine.

To the O/P, you need diff P/L's for base / mobile.

But the fact that u only hear mobiles is simple. You are probably too far away from
the base to receive them, but the mobiles (RMP's) are probably transmitting close enough to
you that u are receiving them.

And u do not have to put in the P/L's. Leave them out, and u will hear the same thing.

The closest transmitter sites to you are Ronkonkoma, Brookhaven, Smithtown, Kings Park & Port Jefferson, all on the Main Line or the Port Jefferson Branch, the two closest ones on the Montauk Branch appear to be West Islip & Southampton, you should be able to hear the remote transmitter in Port Jefferson as it is just up the road from you on Rt. 112, are you using the stock rubber duck? If so you may need an external antenna.

As stated above, your scanner does not support this feature. This is an explaination of what pl, ctcss and dcs do. Selective calling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But in a nut shell, more than one agency can occupy a freq. And by using a pl, ctss or dcs, you can listen to what you want. For example, below is a quick list of shared freqs from the suffolk county page. If you put in 46.44 and no pl, you may depending on your proximity and ability to receive these, actually hear both Lake Grove Public Works and Centereach Fire department on 46.44. As well as anyone else who uses this freq. I used to pick up stuff from across the sound from CT on my pro 93 and pro 95. Those scanners did not have pl capabilities either.

This is all the shared freqs in the Suffolk database page..

Most of your problem is location, location, location. The MTA uses portable radios, they are only 4-5 watts, what you do hear is a 110 watt base, but unless you are right next to the person transmitting, chances are you are not going to hear them.I monitor MTA all day and unless they are in the station next to my shop, I only get the base(located right outside my building)

Except he said he's only hearing the mobile units, not the base stations. ;)

Hmmmm, maybe the vehicle s uhf portable repeater is being used and he is just hearing the RMP transmit with the RMP receiving the distant base. ;)

The simplest explanation would be the dispatcher is using a base that is far away. The system is simplex for the LIRR as with the MNRR. Some use the UHF repeater in the car but not too many.

Our biggest problem is dispatcher training and I know from dispatching on the LIRR side the bases are fewer and lower pwer than those used on the MNRR (North) side.

Our radios are seriously lacking to the point of all patrol uses 2 person units, until the radios are improved for safety purposes.

The MTAPD has ordered new equipment for the Connecticut through motorola, that will be used on the CT State Police system. The MTAPD will be channel 55 in all CSP vehicles talkgroup is "48464", and MNTRANS will be CSP channel 56 talkgroup "48432" this will be in all the PSA's along the New Haven Line so trains can have direct contact with trains.

As for the other areas, I've heard they would like to build up the METRO 21 system, which I think they're using in Staten Island. I've also heard they are looking at Harris radios for these areas. All I know is that it will be a huge improvement, over the simplex VHF we use now.

Hope this helps
