Hi all,

The RadioReference Database is now able to handle multi-zone systems more effectively. A multi-zone system is one that has many, many sites, usually across several system IDs (in the case of a Motorola system). MTS FleetNet is one such system, with three separate zones each containing around 100 (or less) separate tower sites.

Previously, around a year ago, the system was in the DB with sites numbered in the 100s, 200s, and 300s. This identified which site was in which zone, but only visually to the person reading the DB. Trunker type programs, and most likely scanners as well, report site numbers in the 00-99 range for each zone, with the zone number reporting separately. I encountered this when I took the VIA Canadian across the province last August, finding sites in zone 2 that were numbered 26, etc.

Now that the RRDB has been upgraded to version 4, we have the ability to have a number of similarly-numbered sites in the same RRDB system entry, and identify which zone they belong to. MTS FleetNet has been updated so that all three zones are shown in the same section of the DB, with the sites separated properly by zone. Go to the site as it's linked above to see how it looks.

Other systems in Western Canada which may benefit from this new feature include the SK P25 system and likely the new Alberta provincial system when it comes online. Zones in pure P25 systems are a slightly different animal, so the SK system hasn't been changed yet. If it needs to be changed, it will be, in due time.
