If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Ok so I have an old mts200 that I have been using for a specific use for about well lets say six years. I was unaware that they came in different freq ranges. So I bought two more thinking I could program them to match and have three working radios for my purpose. So I then got the cps and a ribless cable. I connected the first (my original) radio and read it. I looked through all the stuff in the cps as I am new and didn't know really what I was looking at. I am tech/computer savy for the most part and am really good with hardware. So I figured I could do this and figure it out. So I saved a copy of the info to my desktop from the radio. I then disconnected it and hooked up the second one (mts2000 model III) and read it. I see that the freq are different. My original (mts2000 model I) is showing 460 MHz freq and the second is showing 850 MHz freq. So I saved a copy of the info to my desk top. I then hooked up the third radio (mts2000 model I) it also is in the 800mhz range. So I have found out through research online that I cant change the freq range on the second and third radios. I think I will sell them off so I can buy more 450-512 MHz range radios. Most likely two or so mts2000's and maybe one or two mcs2000's. Then I had a though. I found on here a list of freq used locally for police, fire, ems, and local companies. So if I program both 800 MHz radios for freq's not used by any local agency or company can I use them for my son and I to have some fun with? If not ill sell them but I was wondering if I could before I do sell them. Also I am wondering how I remove the trunking from the two 800 MHz radio in the cps. That way I can program them conventional with freq's that are not used locally as I said. Is there anything else I should know I am very new to all this. I just had the original radio and it wirks so well for what I use it for that I wanted a couple more. I knew nothing of radio and programing before I started trying to figure this out.

No, you cannot legally just program radios on any frequency and start transmitting. Professional radios require an FCC license to lawfully operate. You have no way of really knowing if any transmissions you or your children make are causing interference to a licensed user.

If you want to get some radios to play with your kids, buy some FRS radios at Wal-Mart and have a blast. These radios are not toys.

Also I am wondering how I remove the trunking from the two 800 MHz radio in the cps. .

If you are referring to removing the trunked personalities, if the radios were written to with an Advanced System Key, you are out of luck, as the original owner has locked them to their system.

If they were written with a software key, just delete the zones, and program only conventional frequencies in them.

Thanks I know they are not toys. I was more wondering how I go about using them for my son and I and I thought there may be licensing involved but I am new to this and that's why I asked. I think I will just sell them then. Ill toss them up on ebay I suppose. I will find some 400mhz units to use with the original one. I don't think I will have trouble selling these as they are clean and not beat up and have no dead pixels. Thank you again for the advise I do appreciate it.

All radios require a license in the USA. Some consumer devices like FRS and MURS radios are license by rule, meaning there are FCC rules to follow, and so long as one is in compliance, they are authorized by the FCC to use them.

Radios like the MTS2000 are not certified for MURS or FRS use, so the license needed depends on the intended use. A part 90 license involves paying fees and getting coordinated for specific frequencies. Other services like GMRS are a flat fee and use set frequencies, however, the MTS2000 is not a part 95 certified radio, meaning it is not legal to use it on GMRS, even if one gets a GMRS license.

Bottom line, as I said before, these radios aren't intended for personal use. They were made for commercial and industrial users under commercial and industrial licenses.

What you choose to do with them is on you, but you have been presented with the information.

Going to put them up on ebay today. Thank you for the info. I have been looking on line for a while trying to find rules and laws on all this but I have not had much luck. I am sure it is because I am new to this. So thank you for the help. if anyone is interested in the radios let me know or check ebay.

If you are looking for some low cost UHF radios to use with your existing, don't overlook the Motorola HT-1000.
There are a ton of them on e-bay and they are pretty inexpensive. Good solid radios.
They are built on the same chassis as your MTS-2000. No display, but that usually isn't an issue if your kids are using them.
Uses the same batteries/chargers/accessories as your MTS-2000.
Same programming cable, although you'll need different software. Sometimes you can find people selling them that will do the programming for you.
I've picked up a few VHF HT1000's for beater radios and they've done well.

These days the HT1000 might be $10 less than a MTS2000, but the MTS can be programmed with a modern computer, whihe the HT1000 requires a DOS machine. The MTS is much more versatile, easier to program, & can have 48-256 ch [depending on the model] while the HT1000can be 2-16 ch [depending on model]. Spend the extra $10 & get the MTS2000.

Good point. Just got tired of the MTS displays losing pixels. I used an MTS-2000-1 on GMRS and 70cm for a while. Nice radio, but limited display. If you are going to do this, go with the Model 2 or 3.

I dumped a few hundred 800MHz MTS-2000's a few years back when I retired our old SmartNet system. We looked at selling them on e-bay, but even back then they were going for $20 or so. Didn't make sense to waste the time trying to sell them. Pretty sure they went off to e-Waste along with the chargers. I haven't looked to see what an 800MHz MTS is fetching now on e-Bay. What, $10 or so?

Wow, $50? Our were pretty beat. They were all rebanded, but 99% of them were model 1's with many having bad displays.
I did hang onto the XTL-2500's that we received in exchange for all our old Spectra's.....

$50 gets a pretty clean type 3 with a good display. Sometimes I just buy one to get the good display. I have lots of type 1's on UHF 403-470. I loan them to friends to use in the bush, where there's no cell service to use on simplex.
