Multiple Officers from multiple agencies are out for the next two nights looking for nothing but stolen vehicles. MVED is out with plate reader cars and the DPS helo (Star 8) will be airborne for this operation. The comms are being handled mostly on VECC Ops 2 and VECC Ops 4. VECC Ops 2 is being patched to SL Regional. The Ops will run from 16:00 hrs to 02:00 on Thursday and Friday nights. So far (in the last 4 hours I have been listening) they have had 2 10-80's and followed a 10-99 vehicle from North Salt Lake to Payson.

Also getting some crosstalk on Ops 5, 7 from the JCAT and Metro Gangs. So far been some good comms and action. They have been placing "the package" (tracking device?) on some of the vehicles they find in lots. Tonight, and tomorrow night should be quite a thrill for us!

Revenue! Revenue! Revenue!

This is the first I've heard of plate reader cars being used in this state. Is this stolen vehicle crackdown a media event, to introduce this new technology to the community?

I expect a lot of Utahns, who already don't even have the money to pay a registration renewal, will soon find themselves with even less money.

Actually, MVED PD has had 3 or 4 of these plate readers for a year or two. West Valley just got the ok to put one together as well. From prior experience with these cars on road blocks, the small stuff usually leads to bigger things. They can tell the officer anything from a stolen car to expired reg. to th RO of the vehicle having warrants.

Sounds like the entire operation was a great success. I missed the final tally last night, should be on the news though.

I want to share my favorite part of last night:

With about a hour left they found a large group of street racers near the international center. They decided to get them all. What they did was waited until they were all in a gas station parking lot then planned to swarm the exits. Star 8 came over to the area, along with 8 PD units. I can just picture in my head Star 8 turning on the "Night Sun" light and the racers trying to scurry off like roaches in a flashlight! Exits were blocked and they got to check all 30 vehicles. Appears that there were a couple arrests and impounds.

SLCPD had a plate reader for a long time.

I've been told they have given it to parking enforcement as they weren't getting enough results.
