FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- The Colorado State Patrol said speed may be partly to blame for a car that flew off a curve, slammed through a guard rail and rolled down a canyon wall, killing the driver.
The male driver in the blue 1995 Dodge Intrepid has not been identified.
The accident occurred at about 6:20 a.m. on South Larimer County Road 23, approximately one mile north of Dixon Dam Road, by the Horsetooth Reservoir.
Troopers said the driver was going southbound on Larimer County road 23, when he approached a 90-degree left hand curve but failed to make the turn. The car continued southbound and struck a guard rail, flew off the roadway, smashed into a tree on the hill and then fell downward, rolling two and a half times before stopping just on the edge of the reservoir, the CSP said.
The car traveled more than 300 feet after the initial point of impact, the CSP said.
Speed has been considered as a contributing factor, while drugs and alcohol are undetermined at this time, investigators said.
The crash is still under investigation by the CSP's Accident Reconstuction Team.
