Well, after a couple different homes and MANY different towers put up I have come to the conclusion that the best all around scanner antenna I have used is the 9 foot stainless steel whip antena from radio shack...I have had it mounted above my 21 element TV antena on 50 foot of tower and now have it just at the peak of the house, but I'm 1,800 feet up on top of Poverty Knob, B.F.E. U.P.!! Ha! West end of Da Upper Peninsula for those geographicaly challenged...
I tried every other antenna from the wild element discones to 400Mhz yagi's...Even had a friend use a starduster CB antenna until it fell apart in a wind storm...
But, for the $$ that 9 foot whip held up to any wind storm and seemed to get ALL the freq's I programed into the scanners, and I averaged over 200 miles for the farthest heard VHF signal... 8)
