People of the World...

I have 2 wireless EDGE PCMCIA cards with the following antenna gains:

1) (-2dBm to -3dBm) for GSM band and (-5dBm) for WLAN
2) The maximum gain is 5 dBi
- Average gain -1 dBi in 850/900
- 2.5 dBi in 1800/1900"

Can an antenna have a negative gain i.e. loss?

Pls advise...

Most certainly can.

1) Gain is just in reference to some other antenna.

2) Antennas can be very poor for lots of reasons.

So if the reference is better thna the tested antenna the gain is negative.
